THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT

"Long bootleg delivers nothing new of Silvestri, yet is still acceptable"

Review by Thomas Glorieux:

The Long Kiss Goodnight sounds the same as any other action score but becomes at the end a somewhat surprising listen. This mainly because the begin is not so great and the end rocks in an expectable way. Composer Alan Silvestri composed this soundtrack along with Eraser (the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie) in the same year, so it is fair to say that both scores show some similarities and of course, the style of Alan Silvestri is all over this effort. This might make it a somewhat expected and unoriginal listen but when the end starts kicking in, then the action music can amuse me. Because after all those strange opening minutes you want and can get enough of the expected but welcome action music.
The begin doesn't hold a lot of interesting material, combined with sound effects and strange background noises it is almost like returning back in time with Predator and Judge Dredd. The first 20 tracks do not contain a lot of interesting material, more not everything is that decent to hear. It's all very dark, threatening and only occasionally combined with an action motif. But from the 23rd track does it start to improve, it's nothing purely exciting or original but that's the score I wanted to hear from the beginning on.

Strange is the track 'She's Got the Truck', one of the finest pieces of action music included on the disc but containing the almost exact same opening tones we can find in the first seconds of Deep Rising (Jerry Goldsmith). It seems that Jerry liked the threatening opening of this score or did he simply think of the same tones when he was composing that score. I don't think that such big coincidences exist in life but still. Alan Silvestri fans will not find something they've never heard before in The Long Kiss Goodnight, but the end creates a better environment then the begin. I would even directly mention that the average film listener will not find something new or worthy of a lot of praise, but its just the kind of listen that can satisfy the Silvestri fan and those nuts of the movie. The end of the bootleg is okay but the begin contains too much sound effects and guerilla noises, sometimes do we even hear a harsh guitar sound or something that sounds like it. This 70 minute running bootleg has nothing new or terribly exciting, but it fulfils two things any action score should do: it sounds like action music and it underscores the movie tremendously, so enough said. Die Hard Alan Silvestri fans should think about picking it up though, because after all this is a bootleg we are talking about.
