MOUSE HUNT

"Oh, how a tiny mouse can inspire Silvestri to write something so fun"

Review by Thomas Glorieux:

There aren't many composers out there that can deliver a full versatile tone when it comes down to the comedic genre. And usually Silvestri delivers it with a full twist. 30 minutes of Mouse Hunt as a release may not seem enough to deliver an adequate pleasure but surely this one can. I believe if you saw the movie you were immensely impressed with its score, but when seen as enjoyment it simply is sheer perfection. Mouse Hunt may have one of the catchiest themes ever written and when it transcends onto the scene with all the mayhem that follows it, it is unbelievable to not like it. In the film it did wonders, on album it gives the ultimate pleasure because it is really just perfect. Alan Silvestri fans beware, fun awaits you from start to finish.

Sometimes the music becomes a bit Mickey Mouse in tone, well I believe there was no other way but Silvestri so cleverly has variations on it that it works as the accompanying flair. Just to think about 'Cherry Catapult' which is a hoot on scene. Still, it is simply a neat little rhythm combined with snippets of the main theme that makes it so effective. That main theme itself shows its prime excellence in the first and last track and also in the excellent 'Caesar's Big Drag'. Silvestri as he usually does with various comedies inserts some versatile sounding pieces of music. For instance the jazz based music in 'Chez Ernie' or the waltz like music in 'Charles Lyle Larue'. True, the first few tracks do need a warm up time but from track 10 you are in the zone of the truth, the enjoyable truth. From then on Mouse Hunt becomes filled with these short but great moments of music, just think about 'Flaming Doo' with its fanfares like of impending doom or the perfect combination of themes in 'End Credits'.

The reason why many people enjoy this score is simple. For 30 minutes it seriously entertains, it offers the score fans a theme that does more for the scene itself and mainly because Silvestri always delivers a fan of film music something different yet lying so close to the trademarks of his style. Mouse Hunt is a true recommendation which is full of wit and flair and basically delivers after serious inspired music (Contact) and pounding heroic music (Volcano) another sound. Again, it needs a bit of warming up but the last 15 minutes are truly sensational. Mouse Hunt is a short release that I can easily say to "recommended for any fan who likes to enjoy a score, period."
