KIMBERLY

"So cute, eh the movie poster that is"

Review by Thomas Glorieux:

Composers are always seeking for their own projects, and one that does this regularly these days is Basil Poledouris, finding the right balance in movie and if it comes that far his own composition for it. For Love of the Game was a perfect example, Kimberly is one, in smaller ways too. Basil keeps finding them, the releases that offer charm but aren't exactly in spotlight when they hit the release date, and usually they become imminent programmed movies on cable or video, or in other cases not known for their strong musical performance in its genre, thinking of Crocodile Dundee in LA. Kimberly surely has more to offer and musically it has heart and charm, a lovely main theme used sparsely and one definite highlight, but essentially its backing up the main scenery with romance, sports and some comical scherzos to top off the bill. In other words, you will probably expect what you will find when you will hear it.

Stylistically, there isn't much needed to set the heart of the listener or viewer in motion, this is all lovely stuff but two things it isn't, interesting for its own fun and bringing the best out of Poledouris' back of tricks. Kimberly offers as said before a charming main theme, witnessed in 'Kimberly Main Title', a lot better in 'The Race', the highlight and once more at the end 'Proposal / Finale'. The rest combines soft emotional, comical stuff all in one, 'Wake Up' and 'Rush to the Hospital' are comical scherzos were Basil brings out the best of his natural self, and emotional it brings heart with 'Dating and Training', 'Deeper Relations' and 'New Years / Benchkiss'. In a word, all well and done with its charm, but musically it doesn't offer the key element of movie music, make it interesting for everyone and at anytime. These scores don't need it, so don't expect it any other way.

Kimberly can best be described as a gentle, fine romantic / comedic little twist to play if your feeling up for it, but of course it does have its moments of incredibly fine stuff, the main theme for sure. I'm not really for the comical run and go themes but they belong as a supplement for the movie and can be registered as the comic background cues. The score has heart, and it will offer the emotion you either loath or love, Basil Poledouris in other words described his musical moments to the world in one neat if charming sounding package. Basically the idea of enjoying it will lie entirely with your taste in music. In other words, I would pick it up if soft romantic soundtracks can make you blush.
