'It's funny, but I don't see music visually, a lot of people describe the music as visual, but I deal with pure sound, while plugging into a certain emotion to write something'

Biography

Born in Scotland, Craig Armstrong studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and later at the Scottish Arts Council, where he won several awards for composition and musicianship including the GLAA Award for Young Jazz Musician of the year. Before entering film music, Armstrong had a successful career as a songwriter and arranger in the pop music arena, creating string arrangements for high profile artists including Madonna, U2 and Tina Turner, and writing the songs "I Don't Want A Lover" for Texas, "Satellites" for Big Dish and "Weather Storm" and "Sly" with Massive Attack. After writing for a number of short films (one of which, Close, won an award at the Edinburgh International Film Festival), Armstrong made his film music debut in 1996, collaborating with record producer Nellee Hooper and fellow composer Marius De Vries on William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet, winning a BAFTA award in the process. In a very short space of time, Armstrong has become one of film music's hot new commodities, leaving his distinctive modern orchestral mark on films such as Plunkett & Macleane, The Bone Collector, Kiss of the Dragon and the smash hit Moulin Rouge, for which he won a Golden Globe Award. The recent The Quiet American and the romantic Love Actually shows another part of Armstrong's voice. The Clearing and Ray are more of Armstrongs's work, Fever Pitch the abstract comedy away from all things. World Trade Center of Oliver Stone is his latest. Away from the film world, Armstrong continues to write contemporary classical pieces, notably the critically acclaimed "20 Movements", culminating in the release of the solo albums "The Space Between Us" featuring vocals from Liz Fraser from Cocteau Twins and Paul Buchanan of Blue Nile, and "As If To Nothing".
