GODZILLA

"You can have fun with Godzilla, if you can find it"

Review by Thomas Glorieux:

Ever heard what a fun album can do to your afternoon? Ever wondered what a rejected score release, this fun can do to the community of film music? Yeah, a load of bootlegs and promos in the collection. If there is one person out there who has the opportunity to buy bootlegs, don't think that he will pass up the opportunity. And I'm lucky I didn't pass up this opportunity because Godzilla of David Arnold is a hoot. The movie did perhaps set high standards (hey, it couldn't do anything else) but I thought it was mindless entertainment, especially that last hour was outstanding. Now considering that Godzilla didn't score big, there was no chance to see a full release of the score of David Arnold, perhaps the one soul on the job that satisfied any critic and fan who ever watched the movie. And considering that the two score tracks on the original release represent jack shit of the score, the promo is the one and sole response for hearing the glorious music of kingdom come hero David Arnold. The sound of the promo is very good, the material present is excellent and the sole misfortune is that some tracks start abruptly with the score, but this never is one to mind bugle about. Godzilla is that price worthy and shouldn't be ignored when you spot its whereabouts somewhere.

First of all, the original release covered two tracks, but these were not random chosen, they simply picked the first two cues that appeared in the movie. I like the bombastic opening namely 'Gorija' with its menacing choral work but the second track is nothing to be proud of, it represents nothing of the good score that follows this line. This shows that whoever produced that album didn't have any respect for David Arnold's work, a longer track could have been difficult but there were better tracks, or perhaps even one long track. 'Warnings / Fish Bait' is a brilliant track, covering both the awesome Godzilla fanfare as a wonderful fanfare when Nick stands eye to eye with the beast itself. This wonder fanfare is a beauty and makes the first two tracks of the original release seem like a joke. Now, what else is great here? 'It's Alive' is an excellent chase cue, covering again small variations on the Godzilla fanfare and one mean rhythm. 'Leaving Manhattan' has the melodic fun of Independence Day and 'Foreign Help!' covers the French resistance theme, which is always a hoot. But the final three tracks cover a wide spectrum of fun, because these babies offer pace and melodic mastery, not bombast into David Arnold superiority. 'Brooklyn Bridge' is a brilliant ride and offers on (1.48) a fantastic fun moment of score, later on (3.30) a sorrowful choir is heard when the monster finally receives its destiny, fantastic. And 'Finale' offers us again the wonder theme with all its pride.

David Arnold fans saw with sore eyes that the promo is the only answer for them. And this is because bootlegs and promos are a rarity and a difficult find. So, anyway you can, if you spot Godzilla, then really don't hesitate. David Arnold with this thematic voice can spice any movie and make it a thrill ride from start to finish. And the movie became just that, a ride containing nothing but pace and a hell of a star. I hope that Godzilla, the score receives the time and respect of producers because a score like this is an insult if it isn't released. So I hope that the score receives that release, that the fans get what they want and that David Arnold gets the credit he deserves. It doesn't always happen that a movie receives such an excellent to listen to score, and after Stargate, Last of the Dogmen, Independence Day and Tomorrow never Dies, Godzilla is the fifth score to really impress the hell out of me. Not only the star in the movie was responsible for a good time, but David Arnold proved that size does matter in Hollywood, and when coming of the Brit himself; we are destined to drool.
