JINGLE ALL THE WAY

"As ever, a great main theme and the report that stupid Santa carols have taken over killer score cues heard in the film"

Review by Thomas Glorieux:

Now this is a real nightmare for every fan of film music: presented here we have 2 score tracks running together for 7 minutes and the rest includes some of the most awful Christmas carols alive. You know the ones I talking about, those that date back to the day when they invented this crap. The entire collection of oldies is here and if they are not in their original form, you can bet it is another re run of it somehow. All fabulous but I didn't buy this score simply for the songs, in fact I never wanted the bloody collection of Jingle Bell Crock; it is boring, too much of it is found on the disc and nothing is here what we can't find in another form, except of course the score of David Newman. I'm no super fan but he is still one of my personal favorites and the score easily proves why; a good old thematic if energized score with a great main theme and some highlights. But don't think it is what I wanted, the main theme is heard once but the highlights (mainly the music during the parade) is missing and for that I loath them, The Brian Setzer Orchestra, responsible for half the crap that we can hear from the first minute on.

Ok, I'm still glad that there is something of a score to be found here but the fan of film music is usually forgotten when it comes down to these releases. For the 7 minutes I can be thoroughly amused by the way; the first track is nothing special but again offers us David Newman at his most charming while the second glows because of its short and late performance of the main theme. In the end it is too less to amuse the casual buyer but I believe a true movie fanatic with an interest towards the movie's music will like it. However, Santa wasn't really listening to my prayer: I asked for score, not songs but he thought he could do me a favor with the carols instead. Jingle all the Way deserves more credit because this is why David Newman remains the least unknown composer of the family. You know, I'm a guy that sticks with the score and do not grade simply through the songs but this simply doesn't work when you look at it. Because all I want is some music to put under my tree. And if that extinct music can cheer my Christmas feelings up, think again. Yeah, merry Christmas to you to!
