Personal quote Not many people adore the style Elliot Goldenthal is approaching in his compositional efforts, but he is nonetheless one of the most abstract but brilliant composers walking around in Hollywood. His scores aren't easy listening, the music isn't always good and appropriate but with Goldenthal you have someone that tries to be different, and that differentiates him from the mainstream public. His biggest achievements are found along the science fiction fantasy genre, the examples are Sphere, Alien 3, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin and one of his more recent and most appreciated I might add Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. Frida later showed the diversity more in tone and received critical and Oscar acclaim. Elliot Goldenthal remains a second guess, but people still appreciate the difficult point of his music and this continues to grow with each composed soundtrack coming along. Biography Elliot Goldenthal was born on the 2nd of May, 1954 in New York, New York. He attended the Manhattan School of Music were he was a student of Aaron Copland and John Corigliano. His career started in theatre and regularly returns to this form of art composition but his career in movies started with Cocaine Cowboys in 1979. However this was a low budget feature and his first real budget score was 10 years later with Pet Sematary. In 1992 he struck gold for several fans with Alien 3, already there exhibiting his dissonant array of music and one year later Demolition Man offered more of the same. Interview with the Vampire was later nominated for both Golden Globe as Oscar consideration and Michael Collins in '96 was the same. Between that he took the torch over from Danny Elfman in becoming the Batman composer on Batman Forever and Batman & Robin and equally scored the acclaimed movie Heat of Michael Mann and Sphere of Barry Levinson. Titus in 2000 and Frida in 2002 are two scores composed for movies directed by his wife Julie Taymor, a director who equally appeared alongside Elliot on Broadway. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within became one of the few Goldenthal scores almost everyone loved and his work on Broadway led to such inspiring scores such as The Green Bird, Othello and Fire, Water, Paper. Recently Goldenthal received a Golden Globe and Oscar for his score Frida and S.W.A.T. became a fan favorite. For his wife Julie Taymor Goldenthal is finishing Across the Universe, a musical production of some magnitude.
(on Titus) January 21, 2000 Michael Mann and I were going for an atmospheric situation. It was the first time I used what I like to call a "guitar orchestra" - where I use six or eight guitars. It wasn't a type of score where you needed a big orchestral theme or you had to actually hit certain actions with music at specific times. (on Heat) November 2, 2002 It was that type of movie. At one point I had changed them to Wagner tubas, which are similar but the bells are different. I preferred the French horns in the end, they sounded brassier - it's a great sound to hear. You should have been there! (on Final Fantasy)
