CALENDAR GIRL

"Flow through Marilyn land"

Review by Thomas Glorieux:

Between his inventive action music and his MV action style stand the years he was bringing life into drama and comedy. The titles speak for themselves and one of these many titles is the unreleased Calendar Girl. The movie about 3 guys chasing behind the legend that was Marilyn Monroe wasn't a hit at all and Zimmer's entry was easily forgotten due to an unreleased CD of his music. This bootleg is covering 40 minutes of relaxing music that doesn't cover a direct line in approach, only a visual to visual approach of underscore that soothingly and bouncily moves forward until the end is reached. Its just a score that you listen to and have fun while doing so. And at the end you wonder what you remember of it exactly and that it just covered lots of guitar and harmonica, and especially a bouncy attitude from start to finish. This is not the Zimmer you can whistle a tune with, this is Zimmer you can just boogie with. Basically there is little change in it all and you must simply go with the flow. 'The Calendar' holds from this very moment already the bouncy attitude and it doesn't stop. Its fun, of course something is missing but you can't deny that this easy going attitude still works and is above all fun. '1962 About Girls' covers even vocalization and listens extremely cool. The more instrumental laden effort is 'A Miracle of Shape / Life Change' which holds piano, vocalization, harmonica and above all loads of electric guitar twangs. Not like Thelma and Louise, these twangs are more Texan based and remind me sometimes easily of Troost's music in Tremors amongst many others. And its simple to mistake yourself in 'Holy Bible / Is Marilyn Time', 'Make History', 'Remember / Night Walk', 'It must be Her' or 'The Beach' because these all listen alike. The occasional organ tone or an electric guitar on fun rocking steroids is what is different about the tracks, but altogether you feel there is little that changes the mood.

Noticed as being slightly different are 'Remember / The Fight' as this one sounds as more dramatic guitar music (just like Drop Zone) or that 'False Situation' is really on edge music like Thelma and Louise, with that I mean the chase music. Its nice that these mood swings create a somewhat different story and listening experience because how fun the bouncy attitude is, you can't listen to it for all the time. You can say this, Zimmer had loads of fun composing Calendar Girl, because otherwise how could you explain a piece as 'She Said No', with a racing rhythm of electric guitars and drums and jazzy trumpets. Really fun stuff and it comes close to the energy of A League of their Own. 'A Date in 20 Minutes' starts equally energetic in style before it slows down to the soothing flow of the first part of the score, with the vocals and electric guitar. With 'Counting Down the Years' and the resolution in 'Finale' Zimmer swings his way to the end. In a way you can say Zimmer didn't take anything seriously in this score but the ticket is that just this style really works with this picture. And so Calendar Girl becomes a pleasant experience that is just fun for one reason, because it wants to be fun. A basic main theme is far from to be noticed, only the styles and occasional returning twangs of the guitar. Sadly the sound doesn't follow the excellence of other Zimmer releases because the clarity is lacking in this department. Its audible yes but loud it hurts the ears and you really would like to feel the energy of this music through the audio canal as clear as possible. With additional music from Nick Glennie-Smith and a Zimmer free flowing style Calendar Girl is fun underscore and nothing more.
