DROP ZONE

"High in the sky, Zimmer rules!"

Review by Thomas Glorieux:

You can call this the fastest soundtrack ever produced. Not just the movie flies with an amazing speed before your eyes but the soundtrack does equally so. The director John Badham called once again to the services of Hans Zimmer, previous projects included Bird on a Wire and Point of no Return. It's funny to say this but only a select group can score this soundtrack. You have to create an amazing speed to make it sound effective as dazzling in its context. The score is really breathtaking but does live up to its purposes, it is fast, action overwhelming and typically Media Ventures stuff. So some people already started scratching their head I presume but trust me, it stays surprisingly cool music to hear.
The score is created with synthesizers and electric guitars but the big difference is that Hans uses them to full effect, making them sound effective and also downright fun, or better said fantastic action music. This is really stuff for any action orientated person and they will love it, if you heard something of Zimmer before. Drop Zone becomes a rousing piece of ballet action stuff high in the sky. The first track to demonstrate that is 'Hi Jack', very unmelodic and loud for some persons but for others just pure fun.

The best tracks are 'Miami Jump', a track that builds up to a bold and rousing finale and 'Too Many Notes / Not Enough Rests'. It begins with a spectacular ballet (that's what it has to represent), it's really sensational and then it becomes simply breathtaking, the action and speed takes enormous proportions and we get a superb action motif (heard in the trailer of The Mask of Zorro and Pirates of the Carribean), before ending with the same ballet stuff. This is really a breathtaking highlight. Zimmer at his highest potential. This score will please just some fans but those will have a blast because Drop Zone is plain amusement set high in the sky. The effectiveness of the synthesizers, electric guitars and sound effects are really outstanding and where this score should fail with any other composer, it makes and fulfills the movie and soundtrack with action specialist Hans Zimmer. The song heard in the begin is really stupid and nothing of a worthy mention. However the rest is enormously fast and seatbelts are required. You want to be blown away, hear this action feast in full musical power and remember to put you stereo system at the highest volume. Like John Badham says in the liner notes: "Play it big, play it LOUD! Make your neighbors call the cops." Boy, is he right.
