GREEN CARD

"An electronic personality leads the score in good ways"

Review by Thomas Glorieux:

I like Hans Zimmer's light and airy scores, great background music and it doesn't sound so cliché like the others. Okay, the synthesizers create a total different environment, but still, it's always something different. Hans strives to something that fits the movie but is at the same time totally new and exciting. I wouldn't call Green Card hugely exciting but that potential is still there, it makes it a nice and good background score that will sooth any Zimmer fan.
First of all, you have to have an open mind to like what you will hear, like the first track for instance. It starts off in an underground metro station, you hear the persons shouting and the metro that passes by, before a drum set starts underscoring the events. It's very strange but for some reason it fits with the movie's idea. The next track combines Hans Zimmer's synthesizers with a female vocal that is quite impressive. The entire score consists of these synthesizer sounds and for some that will be a huge mistake. But I feel that the score isn't bad whatsoever, on the contrary, what Green Card achieves is a fun overall listening experience if you dig what Zimmer brings as standard sound.

I like the tracks 'Instinct', which portrays the female vocal, 'Silence' that has a cool theme, and 'Pour Bronté' that sums up all the motifs of the score. Hans also adds minor parts of flute and even Gerard Depardieu's humming, like we can witness in the movie. Even the end song is quite good and fun, an easy to hum piece whatsoever. This all makes Green Card a score that doesn't sound like something you already heard before, which is nice because background scores like these do tend to sound the same. There is something present in this score that makes it attractive, and I think for each person something different, but then you don't have to hate what synthesizers can do. They call it a form of quick scoring where the art of music is forgotten. I can not deny that its maybe a faster way to score music, but if the motifs or themes aren't good, they will suck big time with an orchestra or on synthesizer. Hans Zimmer thought carefully about the movie's wish, which makes Green Card a pleasant and nice score.
