I'LL DO ANYTHING

"Pleasant entry takes us back to the mellow Zimmer"

Review by Thomas Glorieux:

Okay, in some ways it is impossible to describe a certain genre for this score. I guess you have to see it as a bouncy, light drama / comedy effort as we have seen several of Zimmer in the past. I think mostly you can compare it with little bits of Green Card, Renaissance Man (same year), Regarding Henry (some instruments) and Nine Months. Mix all that knowledge together, give it a stir and a spin and add various instruments and I believe it will come close to sounding as I'll Do Anything. The score itself is no winner in the Zimmer list nor is it the best dramatic score coming of the German, but in truth you can't get better then the flair and overall bouncy mood which Zimmer introduces in four tracks. Yes, indeed again Zimmer combined everything together and immediately in four lengthy cues. It actually works quite nicely and the listening experience is more pleasant because of it. But mostly, I'll Do Anything is Zimmer sounding Zimmer like, different but exactly therefore interesting.
The short liner notes give us a brief example of what we can expect during the listen, Zimmer will experiment a bit with various ideas to make the score work. Like for instance the short vocal work out of Regarding Henry or the mellow string work out of Nine Months, it all contributes to the soul of I'll Do Anything. But mostly it is the thematic material that decides the listening experience.

There are two themes that tie the score together, first is a kind of children's lullaby which is frequently heard during the first track 'Matt'. It is a light bouncy tune and adds just the kind of mellow feel to the entire character story. Yet it isn't as mesmerizing as the second theme, heard during the first four minutes in 'Jeannie'. It is one of the better themes of Zimmer's career and gets just the kind of intriguing quality when the instruments make it swell bigger and better. Track 2 'Burke' in the end links itself the closest to Renaissance Man. The last track, the song is performed by the young girl in the movie. It is an extra which is nothing special to start with. The score itself isn't all brilliance, I mean I'll Do Anything is good for what it has to do, make the emotional link between audience and movie and Zimmer as ever creates that. But it is still somewhat unsatisfying of not getting the highest tone in excellence. It will most likely give Zimmer fans a new dimension of sound and those that enjoy a light bouncy effort, (Nine Months, Green Card). But others will not discover much new to their trained ear, except perhaps the last minutes of 'Jeannie' which is just more jazzy sounding. I think it is a nice score, that can simply give you a nice time but its not all that perfect. But even I, a big Zimmer fan needs to find the potion that makes it so special. A worthy purchase if you simply want more of Zimmer, something not action oriented.
