PACIFIC HEIGHTS

"Apart from some trailer usage and nifty tension, this score is boring"

Review by Thomas Glorieux:

Hans Zimmer's Pacific Heights is as we can predict a typical thriller score where we can hear what we usually expect. Zimmer made the score audible in the first tracks but as interesting material it doesn't fulfill many things. It's listens like Regarding Henry but on a dark tone. And the fact that I didn't found Regarding Henry that good, the interest fades away until some better moments do attract your attention. This score hasn't got track listings, just part 1, 2, 3 and 4. So 'Part I' offers the threatening tone heard in the teaser of Independence Day and the end has some good suspension score when Zimmer finally breaks his boundaries with a powerful yet short attempt.

'Part II' has the main theme in better suspenseful conditions but considering that the score's main theme isn't something to remember it is quickly forgotten. The score consists of a lot of sound effects, reminding you of Backdraft and a Asian motif that attracts Black Rain for no apparent reason. 'Part III' and 'Part IV' hasn't got many good points, and frankly these two tracks suffer from more negatives then the first two tracks combined. Especially here the score sounds and listens like a drag. Pacific Heights is probably one of Zimmer's least inspiring and stimulating listens, the short list of positive moments are regrettable and it's dark nature doesn't hold either the structure or the mood to make it sound interesting. Basically, a score that has little to get excited about, and Zimmer enthusiast may want to skip this one.
