POINT OF NO RETURN

"As ever, Zimmer is the king of the electronic action score"

Review by Thomas Glorieux:

When action scores simply don't function or bring something new, then Hans Zimmer does the trick to bring simply something you would never expect. The approach may be expected but at the same time it combines elements that sound new and feel different. The score becomes a great experience and fits superbly with the movie. The movie goes about a street junkie (Bridget Fonda) that is being sentenced to death by injection. But when the execution is over, she wakes up in a secret organization that trains undercover assassins, and without getting to say anything, she becomes a deadly but beautiful killing machine. Why am I telling you this, simply, because the music reflects the movie and the character.
The first track 'Hate' begins with loud music, this represents the world of Bridget Fonda, when she kills the cop, but the music becomes more melodic and happier and that's the time when she gets a second life and starts with the training. 'Happy Birthday, Maggie' contains the same playful melody but longer and better, this is a great cue and along with the third it's the best track on the album.

The third is just a cue as Zimmer would score it, the track builds up to a sensational finale, a little like 'Miami Jump' of Drop Zone; in fact, persons who liked that score will love this one also. This is the dilemma between Fonda's conscience and her lethal training skills, when she is forced to kill a person with a sniper gun from her bathroom window. The music builds up to the point when the decision has to be made. 'Hells Kitchen' is like the track explains it, very wild, but still melodic. It's no rubbish or noise like we can find in other Media Ventures scores, or as some would think that. The 5 songs are really the noise on the album, the rubbish as they would say. How they fit with the movie's style or score of Zimmer is beyond me, if they are heard in the movie is also a question but it's really boring music. Skip it, Nina Simone hasn't got anything to say with the modern style of music. The score of Zimmer will please many persons, those who adore Zimmer and others who like good action scores. Where any normal Media Ventures' score would end, there goes Zimmer's Point of no Return further to bring exactly what a score like this should achieve, stylistic action music combined with flair and power.
