D3: THE MIGHTY DUCKS

"This is the mighty duck music, short but oh so good"

Review by Thomas Glorieux:

A television composer with experience in movies as series, J.A.C. Redford hardly had the time to score movies with any potential making it into the theatres. And while The Mighty Ducks surely didn't do miracles I would have to say it are the best projects he ever scored along with several other Disney productions. I as a young adult always loved the movies and no small part credit to Redford because his music really sounded superb in context. Champions, the first movie was scored by David Newman and I consider the main theme his composition but everything this score and the second offers of musical material is all worthy of attention. No doubt to mention that Redford orchestrally offered us viewers heroism with an incredible array of thematic quality, making the third Mighty Ducks score D3 a joy for its 15 minute running time.
As the release of the second score, offering us just one score track this album follows the exact same strategy. More songs then score but I'm glad at least 4 tracks are brought to the foreground because Redford's score deserves to be heard by a lot of score fans. The album itself filled mostly with songs is enjoyable for its running time, the songs consisting of good pop beats are primarily from the third film though some are found in the first and second movie. These songs will not become famous but are among the better songs I've heard being released on score albums.

The original score itself is of course the main reason why I bought it and for once, those 15 minutes never disappointed me, offering a begin and end blast of powerful music. It all starts with 'D3: The Mighty Ducks Main Title', a tremendous powerful heroic march including the main theme in all its glory with several moments of pure brilliance coming of Redford's side. This simply is for fans of the movie and / or score a treasure to have. We continue with 'Mr. Goldberg's Wild Ride' bringing a more comical scherzo while 'Morning Showdown' brings Carmina Burana choral performances that will prove why this simply isn't a kids score. And be sure to check out how Redford thematically scores a ice hockey game. But the absolute treasure is 'Victory over the Varsity', consisting of the excellent main theme and some impressive sounding fanfares, choral and orchestral. While overall this score offers more then first imagined, there is still a pack of good material worthy to be heard and it would especially place J.A.C. Redford in a brighter spotlight. This is truly music that surpasses the so called Disney effort and people with a knack for enjoyable sport music will no doubt feel the rhythm flowing through their veins. This release can be found along with the release of D2: The Mighty Ducks, together bringing 5 tracks of extremely solid and pleasurable music, making D3 a Mighty score for a Mighty Duck movie, with the tone on Duck.
