LEGENDS OF THE FALL

"If the Oscar board doesn't do it, then I will! The Oscar goes to .... James Horner for Legends of the Fall"

Review by Thomas Glorieux:

People have always said that James Horner should return to his best period, namely the '80. But what he delivered in '94 and '95 is equally impressive, if not even better. Apollo 13 and Braveheart were nominated but didn't receive their Oscar and tragedy has it that one of Horner's most beloved and best scores wasn't even nominated for Oscar consideration at all. Legends of the Fall received a Golden Globe nomination and that is simply not enough, not even Awards can detail what kind of brilliance Legends of the Fall surpasses. It is pure epic film music, that deserves the highest recognition and the purest review. James Horner really surpassed his obvious talent, he delivered film music that deserves to be heard, and that will continue to live on for ages.
This score packs the biggest power when it comes to epic film music. This is emotion with the big capital letter E. Horner inspired the London Symphony Orchestra's performance and created music that really moves. 'Legends of the Fall' and 'The Ludlows' offer warm emotional love themes, 'Off to War' takes things into John Barry control, James Horner builds and delivers film music that equals Dances with Wolves, and perhaps due to temp tracking, a decision that can come of any person.

And then the ultimate movie music arrives. Along several tracks of other composers, 'Samuel's Death' captures my fullest interest and lets my blood boil. This 8 minute piece starts with some of the most riveting action music I have ever heard, and is simply my favorite piece that Horner composed and then suddenly it explodes in pure emotional beauty. This also happens with 'Farewell / Descent into Madness', 'The Changing Seasons, Wild Horses, Tristan's Return' and the massive and brilliant conclusion of the soundtrack 'Alfred, Tristan, The Colonel, The Legend'. These music pieces bring pure film music that moves each part of your body, that will thrill and capture you every time when you will hear it. This soundtrack of "Epic Soundtrax" offers 75 minutes of the best film music ever composed, any epic and film music fan will discover pure gold of Horner's side. It is amazingly powerful and emotionally riveting. I then also can not recommend this soundtrack more then enough. Let me rephrase it this way: "if there is one soundtrack to have of Horner it is purely this one". It brings simply what film music needs to astound, emotion, beauty, pace, power, brilliance and finally dedication. Legends of the Fall is one of the biggest and best soundtracks I have ever heard, and remains the biggest flaw that the Oscar board ever made about ignoring this soundtrack.
