MUPPETS FROM SPACE

"Alienating Muppet fun with light jazzy zanies"

Review by Thomas Glorieux:

We already encountered the Muppets in the weirdest places, the winner was them chasing a treasure in pirate land but outer space surely beats all the odds. Of course put Gonzo in outer space and call him an alien and everybody is satisfied and convinced. To tell you the truth, it will again be a hilarious movie but scoring such a tale isn't always the easiest thing on earth. Hans Zimmer of course did it with all his might in Muppet Treasure Island but Jamshied Sharifi is unknown and Rupert Gregson - Williams is just a name that links himself with the brother in person Harry. But of all the things you could mention of Muppets from Space it surely has personality and a twist. And of all the odds this score has some great tracks to present, the middle part is perhaps for fans who love jazz based music but begin and end deliver, with all my approval choral magic and a great feeling overall.
For the most part this score is composed by Jamshied Sharifi and he adds to the movie a colorful stroke of music, 'Main Title / The Ark' starts off with a spin towards those classic B-movies with Martians but begins to sound really magical when a choir adds that spectrum of space. The second 'Gonzo's Lament' introduces us with the main theme and you will surely think the world of it when it receives heavenly choral accompaniment in 'Gonzo's Goodbye', one of the best tracks on the score.

One of the four tracks of Rupert Gregson - Williams is 'Singer's Theme', as any partner of the Media Ventures crew he can bring a nice deviant bad guy theme even if its a bit mellow sounding. For the rest the biggest part of the middle section is jazzy, floating with guitar music and some hoppy tones, surely it all works and definitely in 'Rats in Prison' which receives a Texan mood but it doesn't interest me that much. Also clever is the use of a sneaking mood in 'Rescuing Gonzo' that isn't far away from The Borrowers but overall the middle part isn't as fun or interesting as I might have thought. But all that ends well they say and especially true with Muppets from Space, first the choral wonder re appears in 'The Ships Arrive' (is clearly a rip-off track of The Abyss) before fanfares of heroism (the Gonzo theme) in 'Moment of Glory' and a typical Media Ventures but sadly short fanfare in 'The Really Big Gun' give the score more boost. And as said before the excellent choral approach in 'Gonzo's Goodbye' does miracles. And to top it all off Horner fans will surely remember the last dying seconds of 'Boldly Gone' when it closes on Cocoon territory. For all its running time it might have given me more pleasure but I was surprised with the great choral music and it really gives you a different feel overall from Muppets from Space, it isn't as electrifying and energetic as Muppet Treasure Island but it is surely the next best thing because family movies as these types of Muppet creations don't receive kiddy music anymore, no choral and orchestral back up with a colorful jazzy approach in the middle will do now firmly good as well.
