BAD GIRLS

"Goldsmith in those days rarely disappointed, why would he do it with this crap movie!"

Review by Thomas Glorieux:

Jerry Goldsmith in his prime time could score a motion picture like that, and instantly it was classic fun while the movie was forgettable except for the score. Those were the years of the '80 and '90 that simply everything became as it should be. Even when Goldsmith scored lousy pictures, the score was average rarely, fun the most or classic from time to time. One of the examples that fell in the middle category is, was Bad Girls. A movie nobody remembers except for the four women doing manly stuff, Bad Girls as an album disappeared from sight. However, I always remembered in hearing a great main theme and I'm glad my memory served me well in finding a copy of the score after a long time. The score is fun overall, having that Goldsmith stamp of the '90 and while not great, it feels fun because Goldsmith scored better then the autopilot we hear of him today. As said, it is the main theme of Goldsmith that is the killer of the day, with a terrific performance in the second track 'The Hanging' which brings the pace and vigor of Explorers back to life before a marching main theme is heard playing over the speakers. And since basically this theme is repeated in any variation in any track, it is fair to say that Bad Girls will not disappoint for mainstream Goldsmith listeners. While it would amuse you overall or amuse you good has probably got to do with how many Goldsmith scores you own since basically a memory of many reappears after listening, but only by style.

The main theme opens with Poltergeist gentleness the score in 'The John' on guitar before the killer statement in the second track. 'Bank Job' states even the guitar on Mexican rhythms reminding you easily of Under Fire before some action movements are heard, finishing again with the guitar. 'Jail Break' uses a different sound, a playful piano gives it an almost comedic feel with Dennis the Menace like villain comedy before 'Ambush' delivers more of the better action Goldsmith we could find those years, it captures some very impressive moments which we miss today too much. Another great track is 'Josh's Death' where the main theme alternates like something out of Medicine Men before Rambo like action ideas (especially through strings) set the tone, ending with a heroic statement of the main theme, again this track shows the Goldsmith for why many people loved him. A final recapitulation of the main theme (soft and playful) ends the score in 'My Land', stating the obvious of the score one more time. This makes Bad Girls a fun score that could have been more fun if I heard it at the specific year (1994). Now I feel its fun but with a grudge, making me wanna enjoy the score more but I have a feeling that something just doesn't want me to do that. Still, Bad Girls is fun from start to finish, simply because it is Jerry Goldsmith from the days we loved him the most, and that means you know what from you know when. Now, if you can find it, Bad Girls is a recommendation for those that want to hear that Jerry back (for a respectable prize of course).
