BASIC INSTINCT

"Thrilling score for ice pick lovers"

Review by Thomas Glorieux:

While the collaboration with Paul Verhoeven has always been successful so to speak, Basic Instinct seems to remain one of their ever best in both creation as result. Sexual thrillers don't often come this riveting, sexy as bloody effective and works easily as erotic fantasy and thrilling action together. More, Goldsmith wrote probably one of his most mature compositions and was one of the best effective listens of the year. It is Goldsmith's driving thematic mind that makes Basic Instinct so darn good in the film and even so rightfully effective on disc. His main theme and sensual rhythm makes the movie work and made for what it stands today. Ever so fruitfully a composer finds out that only he can make the movie so good and the brooding climatic build up is all what separates it from movie magic, and Goldsmith rightfully deserved attention. The score is probably one of those rightful Oscar winners because without this music by its side, the movie would have lost everything of its appeal, and is indeed a choice of music that should have gained a lot more attention and acclaim. I mean Aladdin is kiddy stuff compared to this. And even if indeed Aladdin is an animated picture, you know that there isn't a more mature composition composed that year.

Of course we know that today it is a big mistake in not giving this score acclaim, just listen to the effective and inspiring main theme that score carries through its veins. It makes not only the listen darn good but helps the movie tremendously. 'Main Title (Theme from Basic Instinct)' with its building tone and 'Morning After' keep building on this immense effective and sensual brooding theme. Yet the sole class of this theme isn't all that's good about it, because this baby can easily work as the sensual theme or the action ripping tone that gives the action the run of its life. There aren't a lot of chase scenes in the movie but darn sure think that 'Night Life' and the brilliant 'Roxy Loses' make up for that; with a relentless pace and a hell of an attitude. Especially the latter is magnificent. Also the last two minutes of 'The Games are Over' are riveting in their pace and conclusion. 'Catherine's Sorrow' has in the begin The Haunting all over it and the spectacular climatic track 'An Unending Story' is brilliant, simply as that, even if this track is altered in the movie with a slightly different ending. Basic Instinct is just what sex is all about. It builds until the final seconds or in this case 10 minutes give the necessary and welcome climax any man and woman want in the first place.

Easily to say, Basic Instinct is one of the top '90 scores of its generation. The action takes on the brilliance and pace of classics as other Paul Verhoeven scores such as Total Recall and the mystery (even deadly effective in its string course) would return later in The Haunting. Yet Basic Instinct is simply darn brilliant in the way that it builds and multiple times reaches that climax. That is what makes the movie and score so special together. The last track alone proves my point, with the trumpet playing of theme in the begin and the climactic burst of relief and thrill around 4.30, until the riveting pace near the end proves the movie to be totally surprising (around 5.00) from start to finish. If any wants a textbook example of movie scoring, that listens as stimulating as it plays in the movie, then Jerry Goldsmith's Basic Instinct is the score for you. It is one of his finest, probably the finest in the genre right next to Body Heat of John Barry and is darn right brilliant listening. I hope Jerry Goldsmith gets more Oscars but I know there is a slight chance in that happening. And if I could change it all for him alone, then Basic Instinct would be one of the many choices to give an Oscar at.
