EXPLORERS

"Explore the synthetic tone of Goldsmith in fantasy land"

Review by Thomas Glorieux:

Goldsmith always performs better when he scores movies of directors he connects with the best, it is a testament that good quality movies means solid and supreme Goldsmith enthusiasm inside the composer's music. See Explorers (movie by Joe Dante) as the Lionheart fun with the space exploring magic of Innerspace, making that Goldsmith enthusiasts will surely dig this score for its musical structure and plain fun sound. As ever, Goldsmith expands the boundaries with an attractive main theme, fitting so well with the context of the movie, its first appearance in 'The Construction' and the next 'First Flight' will more then ever be enjoyed by any musical lover of Jerry's '80 music. This of course makes Explorers the bet of the bill if you haven't heard it yet.
The excellent atmospheric 'No Air' will surely attract your attention with wonderful female vocals accompanying a surreal mood, making the effect even bigger and better. The electronic effects do rain sometimes before your ears, spotted for sure in 'Free Ride' and overall makes the impression towards the subject only more believable. Some of the tracks are short but overall don't harm this soundtrack's listening material, Goldsmith offers us the good stuff in its running time, and when we receive a 7 minute track 'Have a Nice Trip' it all sounds even better then before.

Also of note is the bouncy and fun childlike 'She Likes Me' that brings the listener more diversity. And this score offers us score fans even 3 songs, 1 that didn't make it in the final cut but overall these are some of the best songs ever found on a original release of score material. The '80 was my favorite time of pop songs and these don't change that, 'Less than Perfect' being the favorite of mine. I do recommend every second of it to Goldsmith fans and those that might enjoy a good mix of Lionheart's thematic sound and the spacey magic environment of Innerspace. It again proves that Goldsmith simply connects the best to Dante's movies and it makes the overall final result more fun for film music listeners. Explorers brings another Goldsmith score in mind, and surely the fans should seek and treasure the end result. Or if you don't believe me, then believe Robert Townson: "The key to Joe Dante's movies is to simply accept what is placed before you, no matter how surreal. In each of these films Jerry Goldsmith helps us do just that, after which all the audience is required to do is sit back and enjoy". Take it from me, the man speaks the truth.
