FOREVER YOUNG

"Several great moments in a not so flying album"

Review by Thomas Glorieux:

When Goldsmith scores another romantic tale where the time flies yet stands still, our Jerry composes a score that flies when it reaches the really interesting points and yet it doesn't proceed when I hear certain things. It makes Forever Young not the best nor the brightest but still another solid listen with certain things to offer. Its simply the feeling of not enjoying this album for all its worth and my concentration never picked up the full musical score that Goldsmith throws at us. Perhaps its simply the feeling of hearing nothing solidly new but just the main aspects that makes Goldsmith's score extremely effective or was it just me, not having a good day. In any way, I did not enjoy it as much as I thought I would do but its still worthy of attention and a little review.
The score begins with the main love theme, and while it listens really beautiful on its own I can not enjoy it like other themes. I have never been the type of enjoying every love theme that's written. The more adventurous pieces attract more my attention and offer me more joy. Especially the very suspenseful 'Test Flight' is great to hear on several occasions.

Goldsmith throws good things into the music but they seem to last for several moments and then we get the same feeling as ever, while it all listens so good it feels nothing spectacular on its own, it feels as if nothing really lasted long to write it. Simply my thought but Goldsmith can always compose better and he has proven that more then enough. The ultimate climax at the end of 'Reunited' is solid and beautiful, like any climax should be. Forever Young has never been the score to talk about and shows that the fans enjoyed it, but couldn't find it more then interesting. It feels like listening to music but it does nothing, it doesn't add a spark of magic. Goldsmith is always a master and nothing interestingly new beats a lot of other efforts. In a way this is the best point of the score, though nothing is remarkably brilliant, Forever Young still has its parts, its moments and it brings the usual flair. In other words you can say that he delivered each required aspect, with or without the time constrains for composing it, because that remains an irrelevant burden after the soundtrack's release and listen.
