MY LIFE

"Sweet drama tones from Barry's life"

I remember when watching back to the movie with my parents that it didn't took long until the music did its part. My mom, when she heard the main theme said instantly "what a perfect musical moment, just the theme I want to hear more then often". Of course we are talking about John Barry here, a composer who has single-handedly captured the emotion of the film with style. My Life, the story about a man dying and spending his last days taping his life for his unborn child is a touching movie and instantaneously a touching score. John Barry didn't need a lot of time to pour his heart in this one and mainly it is the Barry trademark that makes the score work. A lot of newly inspired stuff isn't here to be found but all what we want is a Barry score that sets emotion onto the disc in no time. Barry succeeded with a inspiring main theme and an overall emotional piece of work. The soundtrack, a good 35 minutes meanders around without interruption and mainly, more music wasn't needed to set the tone of this score. Barry will always be Barry one way or another and the sound you expect is the sound what you get. From the opening minutes of 'Main Title' does the heart start to flow and Barry's theme, how short, typical or unoriginal it may sound is still one of his all time greatest in the book. It is just the kind of theme the movie wished for and on screen it simply lets the tears flow.

There is of course a main love theme, first presented in 'My Life: Love Theme' and combined with the main theme in that exact same track. Mainly, his love themes all do have a similarity with Dances with Wolves and in the end My Life is that same thing. People who simply understand that Barry's My Life is his trademark sound and a similar attempt towards Dances with Wolves. Of course I don't blame the man for it, because after all it sets the movie on fire but truly evoking or original is not the word to use here. The main sound of the score doesn't change much but gets a more light nature when Michael Keaton recollects to his past, when his dreams or thoughts are remembered. Mainly showing up in the tracks 'A Childhood Wish', 'Child's Play', 'The Circus' and other slight moments during the score. The beautiful main theme ends the score with fashion in 'End Title'. True, Barry remains close to his style of composing and for one he disappoints me on some occasions. But not with My Life, the score is simply perfect for the movie it accompanies and when music makes you cry like that during the emotional scenes, then I don't need a lot more to believe in its effective signal. No Barry can be without My Life, no original approach whatsoever but just sprinkled with the kindest emotional heart any score could wish for, perfect for a half hour of your time.
