INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE

"Indy's final voyage, or not?"

Review by Thomas Glorieux:

John Williams' third score for Spielberg's Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is once again brilliant in every way or form. The Raiders march is used only several times and the rest combines great secondary themes filled with riveting action pieces. It makes that the three soundtracks all have a different approach and manner, they don't sound like there the same, only Williams could bring such diversity and potential in three scores of adventurous fun. What Williams did do is underscore the many moments with comical or scary tones, like when the Young Indy falls in the holes of the animals in 'Indy's Very First Adventure' and the supporting of Indy breaking the floor in the library, which isn't on the album. Or the joyful theme that supports the father, played by Sean Connery running around in a playful waltz almost.
Indiana Jones' main theme is witnessed in several moments, the best of course in 'End Credits (Raiders March). 'Scherzo for Motorcycle and Orchestra' has perhaps an odd name but the action it supports is stunning nonetheless. The originality is high on this third installment and excels the fun and the pleasure to hear it every time.

'Belly of the Steel Beast' is pompous and energetic music, but how Williams builds to the climax with low brassy tones is really impressive and a must hear for Williams' admirers. 'The Penitent Man will Pass' isn't the best piece on the score, but how Williams' music captures the mystery and magic when Indy gets through the traps is stunning, it made me feel like I was doing it also. The last track is 10 minutes of pure adventure and in some ways does the main theme attract lesser on the power and more on the fun, this because the instruments and sound quality are clearer then with Raiders of the Lost Ark. This last score can not be missing from your collection if you have the two first scores and loved them, and in a way it listens better then the second. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade closes the last installment with great flair and sheer pleasure, and it now's only waiting for the fourth film, with director Steven Spielberg, actor Harrison Ford hopefully in action and Williams as the trusted and loyal guardian of the musical presence.
