Personal quote Marc Shaiman, a name that is associated with too much romantic comedies and too less of something else. But that something else has been worthwhile of the attention and it seems that drama, dark comedy, vulgar animation, comedic western and jazz has been scored before by Shaiman. In other words, he seems to be more then the comedic twist and especially the better efforts are those where Shaiman can compose splendid themes. The American President and his City Slickers theme are absolutely incredible. Furthermore his Patch Adams music contained a real heart and was a joy in the movie if you liked the movie for starters. Shaiman is good as what he does and this means that he can surprise you with whatever he can deliver in any genre, at any point in his career. Biography Marc Shaiman was born in 1959, New Jersey. His career in show business began as becoming a vocal arranger for Bette Midler, this resulted in becoming the Musical Director and Co-Producer of the star everyone knows today. Not surprisingly to discover where Marc got this unique style from in his music. His first real performance came for Billy Crystal: Don't get me Started - The Lost Minutes, a Television production. His first film gigs included Big Business and Beaches in the year 1988. Some of Marc Shaiman's best known features include Stephen King's Misery, When Harry Met Sally..., his enjoyable Western scores for City Slickers 1 and 2 (especially the theme is pure classic these days with the fans), not to forget his contribution to the two Adams Family movies, this also includes the two Sister Act movies with Whoopi Goldberg, Saturday Night, Sleepless in Seattle, one of Shaiman's best scores The American President, The First Wives Club, Patch Adams (my favorite), his South Park adventure: Bigger, Longer and Uncut, One Night at McCool's and Rob Reiner's The Story of Us. Alex and Emma and songs written for Cat in the Hat. He is nominated 3 times for The American President, The First Wives Club and Patch Adams in the category Golden Globes. For the fans good to know his small appearances in movies such as Hot Shots, The Adams Family, Get Bruce and believe it or not as animated Marc Shaiman in the South Park flick. Talk about becoming your animated self.
(on how to score Misery) March 12, 1999 Well, one has to be a bit self-deprecating when you pick up reviews and read such horrible words attached to your name and music. Then the first weekend's grosses came in, and that's a bit of a salve, but I'm so Jewish that I thought, "Oh great - now more people heard my terrible score!" (on Patch Adam's bashing) March 12, 1999 To hear The
American President used in the trailer for Saving Private Ryan was beyond my
wildest dreams, in terms of use of music. I was very moved that they felt that particular
theme was going to do what they wanted. Of course, after a few days, I started
neurotically obsessing that people assumed that John Williams wrote that theme. I wanted
to walk around town with a billboard saying, "I wrote that music!" March 12, 1999 I feel like I am very much an audience member - for a movie like that especially - so I might write what I would want to hear as an audience member watching the film. (on The Adams Family)
