'If people do hear a score and are moved by it, I think it's great they go out and buy it. The film is part of life's rich experience, and if hearing the CD takes you back there, then that's wonderful.'

Personal quote

Composer Nick Glennie - Smith is one of the harder to break through composers coming from the criticized structure of Media Ventures. He was one of the early ones though and he maintained to stay for years behind Zimmer, writing additional music for several movies until he got the job to compose the most of the score and movie The Rock, with Hans Zimmer and Harry Gregson - Williams lending a hand. After that immediately The Man in the Iron Mask and people assumed he was out of there. But nothing of that kind, he returned back to additional scoring and rarely but effectively he scored a bigger movie, with We Were Soldiers as candidate for sure. Truth, Nick Glennie - Smith hasn't shown to me that he is an outstanding composer, yet. His skill is obvious and I think in time he will progress, but the question is to which stature and when?

Biography

Nick Glennie - Smith had a classical education at the age of eight. His passion for rock n' roll made that he left school and started to perform in bands. This led to a successive top session musician career and he worked with Paul McCartney, Tina Turner, Phil Collins and Roger Waters of Pink Floyd. He started working as a co composer for Hans Zimmer on several scores such as The Lion King, Crimson Tide, Nine Months, Cool Runnings, The Preacher's Wife, Point of no Return, Drop Zone, Pirates of the Caribbean and other Media Ventures titles. His independent list includes The Rock, Home Alone 3, The Main in the Iron Mask, Lion King II: Simba's Pride, Highlander: Endgame and Attila. We Were Soldiers, starring Mel Gibson is one of the most high profile scoring assignments and recently Glennie - Smith got back in the attention, scoring Ella Enchanted, additional music for King Arthur, co composing Laura's Stern and Little Polar Bear 2, while solo scoring the dud A Sound of Thunder. Nick however remains a fruitful additional composer (due to Hans Zimmer's involvement) for projects as The Da Vinci Code and Pirates of the Caribbean 2, as well as conductor for his own works.

Our craft should be to support the film, not to try and wow everyone with your musicality, your virtuosity or creativeness.

Often music is the glue to hold something together that's not quite up to scratch in the first place.
