Personal quote Patrick Doyle is known in the music industry for his amazing understanding relationship with actor and director Kenneth Branagh. Especially Doyle's first score Henry V became one of his most respected scores and he identified himself as a classical and rich emotional composer. His style for capturing the Shakespearean mood and his classical context for sequencing the score into the project is more then ever worthy of attention. Still, those scores that captured my attention were for non Shakespearean projects, with A Little Princess and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein listed as his best efforts. Sometimes a bit too classical, but more then ever a step towards orchestral power, Doyle has proven that his immense talent and versatility is far from over, with magical fantastical moments in Secondhand Lions, Nouvelle France and Harry Potter he's proven his wondrous qualities.. Biography Patrick Doyle was born on the 6th of April, 1953 in Uddingston, Scotland. He graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and scored music for radio, television and theatre. In 1987 he joined the Renaissance Theatre Company as a composer and musical director and got in touch with some of the biggest productions of the theatre. Later director Kenneth Branagh hired Patrick Doyle to score Henry V and the score became an instant classic with film music fans. Disney's Shipwrecked and Branagh's Dead Again (received a Golden Globe nomination) opened doors for Doyle that he wisely expanded. Today, he is one of the biggest sensations commanding a unique style and sound. Doyle scored the dramatic crime thriller Carlito's Way and the horror Stephen King adaptation Needful Things, that offered Doyle a chance to use choral singing for more demonic effect. The next years offered variety and Doyle accepted this with pure style, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, A Little Princess and Sense and Sensibility (nominated for Oscar and Golden Globe), some of Doyle's best scores to date. Hamlet expanded the collaboration list with Kenneth Branagh and Great Expectations, Quest for Camelot, East West and Love's Labour's Lost are some of Doyle's most diverse scores. Sadly Doyle was diagnosed with leukemia several years ago but he has fully recovered from the decease. Further, Doyle scored the entertaining Secondhand Lions, Calendar Girls and Nouvelle France. Nanny McPhee and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire are winners no matter what, quality we don't hear too often. With Kenneth Branagh he returned with As You Like It, Eragon was the fantasy epic and Pars Vite et Reviens Tard the dark European entry. He maintains to score professional projects, showing his immense skill in both composing and will. Patrick Doyle is also a successful writer for the theatre and orchestra.
(on the use of voices and choir in his music) October, 1999 It was my first score in L.A., and the memory of the enthusiasm from the players was tremendous. The orchestra was delightful, and the playing was terrific. In fact, for one of the cues I apologized in advance because it was so fast; I just couldn't hear the cue any slower. It was almost off the metronome, but they played it brilliantly, and it was terribly exciting. (on Dead Again) October, 1999 The main theme 'Kindle My Heart' was initially written in Indian style but it finally appeared in a major key much more westernized in order to be more accessible to the kids.(on A Little Princess)
