Biography Born on December 11, 1960 in Haslemere England, she was destined to compose music. She educated at the University of Oxford and graduated in composition, orchestration and classical music. She started working for the BBC and composed music for movies and series of all kind. She was awarded by the British Academy of Film and Television for her work and received nominations for several titles. She then turned to Hollywood productions with Used People, The Joy Luck Club and Benny & Joon as her first big projects. You could then already hear the emotional flow that would dominate her latter scores. Though no overall blockbusters, the list includes superior dramas and their respected scores such as The Road to Wellville, Only You, Emma and Addicted to Love. For Emma she received her first Oscar and became the first women ever to receive such a honor. Her scores all have received critical acclaim, The Cider House Rules and Chocolat were nominated and The Legend of Bagger Vance was another score that offered that lush string writing and adoring woodwind melodies. Nicholas Nickleby, The Human Stain and Mona Lisa Smile portray all the adorable yet now over tested Portman formula. a theme introduced at the beginning, and has by the end of the film a proper opportunity
to play itself out. I always loved doing things like that, do scores where I can actually
develop quite a large theme throughout the film, as opposed to not really having a theme
