DRAGONHEART

"Edelman's most full pleasing adventure awaits"

Review by Thomas Glorieux:

There are few composers who can write themes that sweep the listener of its feet. And Randy Edelman has become famous for doing it all his live. While he wasn't responsible for The Last of the Mohicans' gorgeous main theme, he composed classics as MacGyver, the ultra popular trailer track of Come See the Paradise, the wonderful motifs in Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story and the acclaimed Gettysburg. Few have reached the stars but one thing really bugged the fans, why didn't Edelman use the orchestral sound? He writes the themes, yet they pale a bit when they could be used in full orchestral force. Dragonheart changes this, and rightfully so it has become the most popular score Randy Edelman ever composed. It exhibits all the main trademarks, the playful and when it comes that far the over known threatening sound. But expect the fullest color and fully expect the best themes Edelman composed along with Gettysburg, Dragonheart really shows the capabilities of Edelman in musical composition, and while it didn't do the film miracles at the box office, it at least doubled the effect when you were watching it.
Dragonheart has already one of movie music's most beloved entries of the 90', the main title in 'The World of the Heart / Main Title' and 'To the Stars' has packed audiences worldwide, and fans have come to love the attractive and beautiful theme for all its worth. But there is more that Dragonheart brings, 'Wonders of an ancient Glory' is a beautiful second theme and people not blown away with the impressive fanfares in 'A Refreshing Swim' should really be thinking of a hearing aid.

But the other music of Edelman is equally good, 'Kyle, the Wheat Boy' brings the best of the more serious music to life. And finally, 'Finale' brings the best two themes together in one amazing and emotional grand finale, please make sure your handkerchiefs are close at hand. In all honesty, Edelman shows what he can do with orchestral sound and a set of perfect themes, Dragonheart offers us all the answers. People wondering why none of Edelman's scores simply attract their attention should really be glad of this creation. It is beautiful, playful, threatening but all together its one of the best scores of 96' and totally enhances the pure pleasure of listening to a movie score. It has Daylight among Ghostbusters 2 trademarks inside it, and especially for Ghostbusters 2 this isn't a surprise. This is probably one soundtrack truly deserving a release, it again features themes deserving to be heard. But as long as Randy Edelman continues to write on this way, and can accomplish to get an orchestra, or in other circumstances is willing to insert it in his music. Then things can really look promising for fans of all genres, then he can prove that Dragonheart wasn't a one lucky shot.
