KINDERGARTEN COP

"Sweet stuff with the inevitable tension ruble"

Review by Thomas Glorieux:

This is actually the first time that I heard Randy Edelman compose such a mellow and soft score, only occasionally filled with his over known threatening tones. The various motifs weave in and out of the soundtrack and bring a lovely character to life. Edelman underscores the most important characters with flair, the piano and synthesizer work very nicely together in this one. Only the end features the dark and threatening approach but luckily is this also the one and only time. I liked the movie very much and hearing this score a couple of years later makes it much more enjoyable, all those moments return so gently before your eyes again.
There are a couple of standouts like 'Children's Montage' which features a lovely lullaby for the children and 'Closing' that uses the main theme for the last time.

Only briefly do we hear those dark moments like 'Stalking Crisp' and 'The Tower / Everything is OK', but these listen very good if you compare it with 'Fire at the School' which is actually the only track that has really harsh moments. It's a shame that this track is the longest of them all and that it is found at the end because it somewhat influences your judgment, this happened only once because the second time I simply ignored the fact of being there. You can describe Kindergarten Cop easily as a lovely children's score with soft themes and briefly an act of tension or suspension. But with the various moments of melodic theme it is a nice soundtrack for those who saw the movie. The score listens very nicely and ends like it started, with an overall nice feeling. Children scores have to do this and it shows that Edelman can also accomplish this when he wants to, like he did before with Beethoven. It is worth approaching if piano underscored soundtracks can humor you and if you know something of Edelman's tension way of scoring. Then Kindergarten Cop will likely amuse you.
