'
I consider writing music for film a noble calling. But it can be discouraging.'

Personal quote

Randy Newman is probably more known as song writer than film composer. In most cases, he has combined both in his movies like for instance successful examples Toy Story and Monsters, Inc.. He is also a celebrity with the Oscar because almost every year he has captured an Oscar nomination (mostly for song) but also several scores were nominated. Pleasantville is a respected score with the fans but what I usually consider is that Newman writes good but the scores miss pure class in overall form. They have always got good ideas but I usually have a negative feeling either way I see it. Meaning I don't consider myself a Newman fan like I'm for instance for David and Thomas. Still, I suppose you have to give him credit for his overall career and his always catchy lyrics..

Monsters, Inc. I think is a Thanksgiving release, but it's no turkey!

There's never enough time to write a score. I would sacrifice anything for time - money, even family.

Directors keep asking for funnier music. What is funny music, anyway? I could stick the baton up someone's ass while we were playing, and then at least the orchestra would laugh.

Its hard to tell a director "here's where the violins go" and "these are French horns here." He has no fucking idea. But when I work with synths I sometimes feel the ghost of my uncle looking over my shoulder saying "EVIL, EVIL!"

There's a key part in Michael where the angel is coming down the stairs. I got myself into a religious mood and wrote an inspiring piece. The director didn't like it, wanting it funnier, so I lightened it up. They still didn't like it, and ended up putting in farting tubas.
