Biography Evanghelos Papathanassiou, today formerly known as Vangelis was born on the 29th of March in the year 1943, Volos Greece. He was soon interested in music and at the year of 6 he had his first live performance. When he was 15, he joined the band "The Forminx", becoming famous in the '60 in Greece. In '68 he formed another band called Aphrodite's Child which resulted in several hits in Europe. After the band split, Vangelis started writing various compositions for French directors including the work for Apocalypse Des Animaux, which took his career on the move. Yet it was in 1981 that Vangelis became world famous, when he received an Oscar for Chariots of Fire (today known as one of the most recognizable themes ever composed). One year later the cult classic Blade Runner of Ridley Scott equally received a Golden Globe nomination. From then on Antarctica and The Bounty were composed but not until '92 did Vangelis step again into the spotlight with 1942: Conquest of Paradise, again capturing a world's imagination with a theme that remains to be popular. Vangelis was caught in the picture with his music for the NASA space mission Odyssey, namely Mythtodea. Alexander of Oliver Stone introduced Vangelis back to the score community for good. Vangelis remains a master of synthesizers and keyboards and is famous in his homeland Greece as the rest of the world..
Music was parallel to
everything I did and to all my thoughts, as well as the best vehicle to understand the
world and communicate with the nature. I have always felt that you should not
borrow knowledge from others, because personal experience and development are of utmost
significance.
