The basis of the discography of Juan D'Arienzo as presented here is the track listing of a set of almost 50 audio-tapes "Colección Cronológica - Para coleccionistas" (of unknown origin) of which I have a copy (unfortunately, a copy of the track listings only, not of the tapes). Among friends I have noticed a strong interest in a complete description of the discography of Juan D'Arienzo. Such a discography doesn't seem to be available on the net. I hesitated some time using these data here as I certainly do not want to pretend that these data are the result of my own research (something I would not be able to do) but finally decided to go for it.
I checked the data wherever possible (meaning that I could not check all of them). Most important secondary sources were data published by TodoTango and the books of Roberto Gutiérrez Miglio "El Tango y sus Interpretes" (Ed. Corregidor, 1992-99, Bs As) [abbreviated as RGMiglio later on] which contains discographies of some of the singers of D'Arienzo (Carlos Dante, Francisco Fiorentino, Alberto Echagüe, Armando Laborde and Osvaldo Ramos). To a lesser degree, and very cautiously (because sometimes unreliable) information from CD's was incorporated (among them one recording from the El Bandoneón series and several from a Buenos Aires Tango Club edition, which were missing in the original "Colección").
Discrepancies between the "Colección" and other sources were minor : a few differences in recording dates (limited to a few months, in some cases easily attributed to typograhical errors), and a few cases where the identification of the singers was contradictory. If relevant they will be mentioned in footnotes. A weak spot, undoubtedly, will be the authors : unless you have access to SADAIC-archives or original scores (which I don't) all information seems rather unreliable (it is a pity that Roberto G. Miglio doesn't mention authors in his discographies).
More painfuly, at two places the quality of the copies of the "Colección Cronológica" didn't permit to read the titles. Johan , my homonym from Odense, Denmark, has identified these two titles. Thanks a lot !  [see Updates]

09-2003 : Johan, my homonym from Denmark, has brought to my attention that "Primerísimo" (1973) was missing in the discography. It now appears to be one of the 2 unidentified pieces, described above. He also found an error in the last recording date for Héctor Mauré in the Summary table below. Thanks Johan !
09-2003 : "Tu Pañuelo" (1942) was wrongly labeled as a tango but it is a vals.  I also had the opportunity to listen to "Mimí Pinsón" (1973) and it is indeed sung by Osvaldo Ramos alone (not in duo with Armando Laborde, as mentioned in the "Colección").
10-2003 : The other unidentified theme is now also found : "Salí de Perdedor" (1940). Again thanks to Johan (Odense, Denmark).
11-2003 : Fixed an error, "Adiós Corazón" (1958) is sung by Jorge Valdéz, not by Mario Bustos (Gracias a Roberto, de "La Mesa del Café")
04-2004 : As I had the opportunity to listen to more recordings I could resolve a few ambiguities in the available sources
- "Amor de Fortinera" is indeed a milonga, not a tango as mentioned by Miglio in the discography of Laborde.
- "El Látigo" is a milonga, not a tango as was mentioned in the "Colección".
- "Siete Leguas" is a tango, not a vals (my error).
- "Salí de Perdedor" title corrected (not "... del ...").
- Note on "Argañaraz" added (on the relation with "Aquellas farras")

1928-1929

Juan D'Arienzo was born December 14, 1900 in Buenos Aires as a son of Italian immigrants. Violinist with a conservatory education, D'Arienzo is best known as an orchestra director. Already at the age of 15, he started performing, together with his friend, the pianist Angel D'Agostino, in a youth orchestra. From 1921 on, he played jazz (accompanying silent movies), an activity in which he would meet the banjoplayer (!) Lucio Demare. But D'Arienzo returned to tango, being part of several formations (Orquesta Paramount, Los Ases del Tango, Orquesta D'Arienzo-Visca) which will gradually evolve into the orchestra, his orchestra, with which D'Arienzo started recording for the label Electra in 1928. One of the bandoneonists at that time was no one other than Ciriaco Ortíz.

[A1] According to RGMiglio (see introduction for complete reference) these 4 tangos (Callejas Solo - Esta Noche Me Emborracho - Quejas Del Suburbio - Siga La Farra) were recorded twice in that same year, once with Carlos Dante-"cantor" and once with Carlos Dante-"estribillista".
[A2] Instrumental acc. to the "Colección Cronológica", but in fact with Carlos Dante (as confirmed by RGMiglio and as can be heard, in the case of "Muchachas Cuidado", on El Bandoneón n°133).
[A3] According to RGMiglio these 2 tangos (Ché, Careta - Mala) are often ascribed to Francisco Fiorentino (as is the case in the "Colección Cronológica") whereas the singer is in fact unknown ("cantor sin identificar").
[A4] The "estribillo" ("Mis amigos ya no vienen...") comes from the lyrics by Contursi and Maroni ("Si supieras...")
[A5] This version is missing in the "Colección Cronológica" but can be found on El Bandoneón n°133. The poem being recited is "Apologia del Tango", by Enrique Pedro Maroni, anticipating the famous version of Tita Merello.

1935-1939

Six years later, Juan D'Arienzo returned to the recording studios, this time those of RCA Víctor, a label he remained faithful to until the end of his career. He had already abandoned the violin, being devoted to directing exclusively. Rodolfo Biagi had joined the orchestra as a pianist and would leave again 3 years later, in 1938, to form his own orchestra, being replaced by Juan Polito. In 1937, Alberto Echagüe joins the orchestra, being introduced to D'Arienzo by his friend Angel D'Agostino, and leaves in 1940 (joining the orchestra directed by Juan Polito).
