how to make a petticoat?

this way of making is only for petticoats till 60cm.~_^ if you like to make a longer one, than you'll have to do it differtend.

(white fabric is is a real petticoat and the colored one is just an example on scale 1:2)

width of the fabrics 1m40 or 1m50 wide.

1. measure the length of your (full circle)skirt (example: 40cm)
2. divide that by 4 (example: 40cm : 4 = 10cm)
3. than add 2 cm for hem and seams (example: 10cm + 2cm = 12cm) => that will be the height for the lengths of fabric to cut.
4. cut those pieces:

* length 1 = 1 time the width of the fabric.
* length 2 = 2 times the width of the fabric.
* length 3 = 4 times the width of the fabric.
* length 4 = 8 times the width of the fabric.

5. we can put everything together now.
6. cut the elastic (is quite wide with a frill on the bottom-side, special for this) to size and make it as a ring.
7. make all the lengths of fabric as a ring, by sewing the short side together.

the lengths of fabric are rings now.

8. make, at the bottom of ring 4 a rollhem, with or without fishing-threat for extra flair.

bottom-side of the largest ring with a rollhem. (without fishing-threat)
(with fishing-threat)

9. if the fabric fray, overlock (or zig-zag) the rest of the edges, so everything is nicely finished.

nicely finished edges.

10. sew a lose treat on to topside from rings 2, 3 & 4 for gathering the fabric.

gathering-threat is in place, ready to put the lengths together.

11. now we are going to put the rings together, starting at ring 4 to ring 3.

rings 4 & 3 are pinned together.

rings 4 & 3 are been sewn together.

rings 4 & 3 are together.

12. ring 3 to ring 2 & ring 2 to ring 1.

rings 3 & 2 are pinned together.

rings 3 & 2 are been sewn together.

rings 3 & 2 are together.

rings 2 & 1 are pinned together.

13. now that the first layer is finished, you van repeat it another time or even 2 times for a very wide petticoat.
14. when al the layers are finished, you can sew them, one by one, to the elastic.
