History: Hyottoko is a member of the Oniwabanshu and like all the other members is very loyal to their leader, Aoshi. He looks very impressive but very stupid too, which in fact, no offence for the fans, he is. Not much is known about him actually.
Commentary of Nobuhiro Watsuki:
This character is
based on the idea of "hyottoko" meaning "man of fire". I wanted him to
live up to the image of a ninja, but making the episode I realised that
there were some things not quite right. He didn't quite fit in to the
world of manga... Concerning his personatlity: he's a natural idiot and
very pretentious, but it's his role that asks for his personality to be
this way. But during the battle against Kenshin (using his flame technique),
many people (readers, fans and many friends)made me see that the battle
techinques looked more like magic than like techniques. I apologise to
them, but at this time I'm not in a perfect shape...because of the heat!
The graphical style of Hyottoko is that of a mutant that has already appeared
in an anime. Because he needed to be deformed and needed to be able to
have an oil bag in his stomach, I wanted him to be rather large! But because
this was my first experience drawing someone like this, I didn't have
much to go by, but it turned out alright in the end.
