History: With his x mark across his left cheeck it's hard for Kenshin
to run from his past. Before the restauration of the Meji-government Kenshin
was the ruthless Battousai. He killed many people and ruined many lives
of those who got left behind. But he changed. Instead of taking a job in
the government after the Meji-restauration as almost every other assassin,
he took a vow of never to kill again and use his sword only for the protection
of people. To make sure that keeping his promise would be a little easier,
he carries a reversed edged blade. He's become a rurouni (wanderer) and
upon his wandering path he stumbles upon Kaoru,
a girl who runs the Kamiya dojo, desperate to keep Kendo alive. He eventually
saves her and the name of her dojo from a Battousai impostor and decides
to stay with her for a while. Could it be his affection for her?
Commentary of Nobuhiro Watsuki:
The model of Kenshin
was origionally Genzai Kawakami, an assasin that really existed, he turned
out to be quite different.
Genzai Kawakami is one of the three great assasins of the end of the Edo
era. Being so small and skinny, one could easily mistake him for a woman.
But his ruthlessness makes him the most bloodythirsty man of them all.
He mastered the technique called "shiranui" and is most know for assasinating
Shozan Sakuma. There no real evidence to prove he has done the other crimes
he has been accused of.
Dissapointed by the new goverment regime, Kawakami opposes to the restauration.
After a little of research I found that his opposition was less political
than ethical: it seemed asif he wanted to get back at the government for
betraying his lost companions. Samourais had no future in this new world...
Eventually Kawakami was accused of crimes he didn't commit and was executed
in the 4 year of the meji government(1871). This is where Kenshin, ex-samourai,
now a rurouni, originates from.
Kenshin didn't really have a specific graphical model, but since all my
other main characters were good-looking, big, carried lots of impressive
armour and weapons, I wanted to create a character that was the exact
opposite. But iin the end he looked suspiciously feminin! So in a desperate
act I added a x-shaped scar on his left cheeck. This cross became the
trademark of Kenshin Himura.
