History: Megumi is a descendent of a family of skilled doctors. She used to work for Kanryu, who used her to produce cheap opium. When she found out how many people had already gotten addicted to it and died because of it, she fled. Kanryu didn't just let her run off. She was too valuable for him, since she was the only one who knew the secret formula for the cheap opium. Kanryu sent the Oniwabanshu, that was working for him, after her, but she foudn shelter and protection with
Kenshin. He protected her, but because she was afraid of Kenshin and his friends getting hurt, she ran away. The Kenshin-gumi of course went to rescue her and encountered the Oniwabanshu on the way there. Unfortunatly that encounter was the last battle for Hannya, Hyottoko, Shikijo and Beshimi. They were brutally slaughtered by Kanryu's gatling gun, protecting Aoshi, their respected leader. Megumi returned to the Kamiya dojo with Kenshin and company and remained to work there with dr. Gensai as an assistant at first and then more as a second doctor. She has a crush on Kenshin, but I think you can see that she knows he has deeper feelings towards Kaoru. Although she keeps provoquing Kaoru and trying to get Kenshin to herself, she clearly respects Kenshin's feelings. Though I think she's simple got a terrible crush on Sanosuke if you ask me...

Commentary of Nobuhiro Watsuki:

Without any specific model, this character is based on an adult woman. Lots of fans were surprised fo the difference between the Megumi that appears in the bonus at the end of manga volume 3 and the one in volume 4. To me, they are the same Megumi with the same personality. The bonus Megumi plays a rather small part next to her 3 brothers and sisters, there she had more of a passive role. But in the manga she was supposed to have a certain impact on the readers. That's why I added a 'soft' side to her. This being the first time I drew such a character, I needed to learn a lot. After re-reading the episode, I regret not having her made a bit more tender. But that would have been very difficult, since the main emotion of Megumi is her psychological conflict...
I like drawing Megumi. She's the only person able to give Kaoru advise from a woman's point of view. I'm going to let her appear very frequently in the next episodes, as a secondary character. This shouldn't be too hard since she's a medic, indispensible character in the story. I often get comments of readers like "she would look good with Aoshi" or "Sanosuke and Megumi look good together". For the first case I believe that just because graphically they are in hormany and in the second: they have the same temper. However I do not know yet who she might be with, as with Kenshin and Kaoru. Megumi's theme is redemption. I wanted to link that of Megumi with that of Kenshin (Battousai), but came to realise that describing Kenshins redemption is not going to be as easy as I thought. Thinking about it alone makes my head hurt!

Her graphical model is the same as that of "Pepe G, the cyborg", a manga of my master, M. Obata. I've tries to imitate his manga, but I could never draw it exactly the way he did. Actually, from a graphical point of view, Megumi's a complete failure!
