History: Former onmitsu (ninja) for the Inshinshishi during the Bakumatsu, he was defeated by Aoshi in battle. Aoshi trained him afterwards (the trained just about anyone in the Oniwabanshu, didn't he?) and he became a member of the Oniwabanshu. He is as loyal as the others and sacrifices his life for Aoshi as well. Those were some brave men... Commentary of Nobuhiro Watsuki: Shikijo's model is based on that of Sanosuke. Surprising, but true! He has hte same personality as Sanosuke (concise and confident). It's an energitic opponent and he's leading his group (in order of Aoshi of course). Concerning the combat abilities between Sanosuke and Shikijo: my goal was to nicely portrate the contrast between the two opposing groups. I hope to have succeeded. Hannya, another member of the Oniwabanshu, hasn't entirely been described as negative, as a real 'bad guy', so I wanted to make of Shikijo a purely 'bad guy'. But because of his heroic death, he became more of a hero than a bad guy. He has also gotten several fans, who are usually fan of sidecharacters, which is the case for all Oniwabanshu members actually. The scene that struck most Oniwabanshu lovers, was the scene in which you get to see the young Aoshi. Bringing in a strong and handsome character always does the trick! Shikijo doesn't have a specific graphical model. Because he needed to be an impressive opponent who's full of energy, I gave him an overmuscled body. Meanwhile, to make him look more awkward, I added scars all over. And as usual I drew the muscles the way muscled charcters are drawn that feature in american comic books. |
