Introduction.

As I am an international weightlifter since years, you can really call me a weightlifting addict.
I have been practicing this Olympic sport for 22 years now and I am multiple national champion and European Champion 2009!
My best results in snatch are 127,5 kg and in Jerk 155 kg, total 277,5 kg (bodyweight -62 kg).  In 2008 I became 13th in the Beijing Olympics.

I started this website to try to compensate for the general lack of information and interest on weightlifting in Belgium and in the meantime I also wanted to show my gratitude to my sponsors (ASICS, SANAS, La Mariposa).

Beside some personal information you can find lots of information on Belgian weightlifting, Belgian records, contact information from clubs to federations, database of Belgian entries in European Championships, World championships and Olympics.
But ofcourse there is also general and international  information on Olympic lifting, explaining the rules, how to make a snatch and clean and jerk, interesting  links,...

I competed in several international weightlifting championships like European Championships, World Championships and olympics  and made a lot of  friends. Among them some some real weightlifting stars.
So I also put a gallery with real original pictures.

PS:
I'm such a maniac that I want to know the word "weightlifting" (USA, GBR) in all languages.
So far I have for the different countries; "gewichtheffen" in Belgium and the Netherlands,  "gewichtheben"  in Germany.
In Poland the magic word is "podnoszenie ciężarów" while In Slovakia they call it "vzpieračská" and in Czech "vzpírání".
The Russian translation should be "Тяжёлая атлетика", pronounced as "tjascholaja athletika" and the Bellarusian "цяжкая атлетыка".
In Latvian language "svarcelšana", but in Lithuanian it's called "sunkioji atletika" and in Estonian it is "tōstespord".
In Swedish  it looks like "tyngdlyftning", in Norvegian "vektløfting", in Danish "vægtløftning" and in Finnish "painonnosto".
Italians use  "pesistica" and the French "haltérophilie", the Irish speak about "Togail meachain".
In Portugese "halterofilismo" but in Brasil they call it "levantamento de pesos".
In Spain it is  "halterofilia" but in South America they talk about "levantamienta de pesas".
The Greek equivalent is "άρση βαρών, pronounced Arsi Varon" and the Turkish is "halter".  Hungarian: sulyemelés
Serbian: dizanje tegova / дизање тегова , Croatian: dizanje utega, Slovenian: dviganje uteži.

But also the updated sections will be listed here.

  •  2010-01-16: French Club Competition : 2nd round :Tom Goegebuer 260 kg total @ 60.5 kg bw
I started training for the European championships beginning of January so in the second round of the French club competition I was already trained a bit. I weighed in at  60.5 and I snatched 116 (after a correction)  and I jerked 144kg.
As I will be 35 years old in 2010 this was my first competition as a master. This 260kg total is 25kg over the World record Masters but  these records are only validated when done on a World or European championship for Masters.
Anyway most important, I started the season pretty strong and I am aiming for a high result at the European Championships in April!

From 19- 26th of November the Senior world Championships are organised in Goyang City, half an hour driving from Seoul. After capturing the European title in the -56kg class, I decided to lift in the -62 kg class. These World Championships are not yet offering a chance to select myself for the Olympics and on long term view it is better, mentally and physically, lifting in 62.
My ambitions were to do better then my national record of 277.5kg total and I was not counting on a top ten like I would have done in 56kg class.

I arrived only 4 days before my competition (arriving earlier would have meant I needed to organise a training camp somewhere) and I still suffered from a jetlag (with the 8 hour difference between Belgium and Korea)

I was only able to snatch my opening weight of 122kg and missed 126 twice. A dissapointing result after my training snatch of 127.5kg. I changed the plan for the clean and jerk and went for three certain lifts till 151 kg and my 273kg total gave me a 15th place. Not bad but I expected more after the great results towards the Championships.

Ofcourse I'm still planning to defend my European title in the 56 kg class next year and try to qualify for the Olympics in that class.

Results can be found on iwf website.

I decided to make a test for the coming World Championships and competed in a competition in France (Comines). At a bodyweight of 63.35 I snatched 122 and missed 126 behind, but in the third attempt it went easy. The jerk went also strong with an easy 152kg. My total of 278 kg is the highest total I ever made so this is very promising for the World Championships.

Video of 152 kg.

On 10th of October the first round of the French club competition started. As I was eating before weigh-in so i made a new record of 64.6 bodyweight! I snatched 119 and surprisingly missed 124 snatch so I decided to take 125 but missed again. The jerk went better with an easy 147. Unfortunately I dropped 151 kg just before the down signal. My club ASPTT Lille made a good start with 413.8 points. Results

The IWF has published the list of dopingoffenders in 2009 up to now (19)
Among them the Asian Champion from Iran, 25 year old Rashid Sharifi, who was counted as the man to folluw up Hossein Rezazadeh but also Olympic Champion -63 Pak Jong Suk from North Korea!

On 26th of september the German Bundesleague competitions started on in several parts in Germany.
As in previous years I'm competing for KSV Hostenbach in the strongest second division, South West (Süd West).

I started with my club against the club from Nagold, who just moved up to the Bundesleague. However with a renewed team, they emerged immediately as one of the strongest clubs in the second division.
Hostenbach - Nagold ended  to 535.9 - 598 points.

My bodyweight was 62.4 kg and my trainingssessions had been extremely good.  However, I had to drive the 650 km to Stuttgart myself so I didn't arrive completely relaxed at the competition. My first snatch with 118 kg was a little bit shaky and also the second attempt with 124kg was not performed technically as good as in training . 126kg in the third attempt went wrong but it has been a long time since I snatched that weight and after such a long trip I am pretty happy with the 124kg.
In the the clean and jerk I made three good attempts with 142, 146 and  148 kg. My total of 272 kg delivered me a good 160 German Kilo points which places my provisionally in the 3th place overall (in the whole German Bundesleague).

  • 2009-09-26: German & French World Championship test

The German World Championship contenders had a test competition in Austria on 5th of september. Most attention went to the Olympic Champion Mathias Steiner who made his first competition after the Olympics.

Mathias Steiner 190+235@ 144.5 kg (430 Sinclair)
Jürgen Spieß 170+200 @ 99.1 kg (412.2 Sinclair)
Almir Velagic 180+220 @ 131.6 kg (410.7 Sinclair)
Jakob Neufeld 138+172 @ 79 kg (383.3 Sinclair)
Tom Schwarzbach 140+188 @87.4kg (385.5 Sinclair)
René Horn 150+200 @ 99 kg (390 Sinclair)
Michael Bohm 140+185 @ 88.5 kg (379 sinclair)

Video

The French had their test in Ville Neuve Loubet on 26th of Septembre.
Also lifters from Spain and Germany competed.

Results

The first competition of the new season in Belgium started with a small tournament, Grand Prix Adry in Edingen.
I started, because my last competition dated from before the summer and in the meantime I started prepairing the World Championships that will be organised in Korea in november.

With a bodyweight of 62.4 kg, I made three perfect snatched till 123 kg and three good clean& jerks till 145 kg.
My total of 268kg at  10 weeks from the World Championships was very satisfying and ofcourse I was also the best lifter in the competition with 383 Sinclair points.
Team mate Tom Van thienen made new national records -105 kg with a bodyweight of 97kg. He snatched 131 kg and jerked 151 kg for a total of 282 kg.

  •  2009-05-08: European Championships 2009 - Bucharest, Roumenia Photo report
The final round of the Belgian club championships took place in Merelbeke.
Teams consist of 3 athletes and the Sinclair points are added. The team with the highest score after three rounds is national champion. My team, Royal Olympic Ghent had only 2 athletesin the first competition, so we still had to make up a lot.
Our best lifters Tom Van Thienen, Luc Lammens and I were all lifting. Tom Van thienen snatched 127 kg setting a new national record and jerked 147 kg, giving a total of 274 kg also a new national record -94 kg (315 Sinclair). I made 6 good lifts, 116 kg & 138 kg (367 Sinclair @ 61.5 kg). Luc Lammens master lifter (+35year) made national master records-77 kg with 110+133. His 243 kg total at a bodyweight of 76.5 kg were enough for 305 sinclair. Thus our first team made a great 988 Sinclair points, thus surpassing all other clubs.

PL. Club 1 2 3 TOTAL
1 Gent 1 409.91 935.57 988.11 2,333.59
2 Zaventem 1 728.59 756.33 580.28 2,065.20
3 Seraing 1 692.35 686.97 612.86 1,992.17
4 La Louvière 1 624.74 648.83 704.66 1,978.24
5 Waregem 1 501.60 132.06 515.62 1,149.28

Our second team with beginners also did well.  Kenta Umegae (71+94 @ 61.7 bw - 237 Sinclair) and Bjorn De Neve 57+67 in his second competition( @ 80.3 kg bw - 163 Sinclair points).

This year's European Senior Championships are organised in the capital of  Roumenia from 4-12th of April..
The final entry lists are published on Polska Stanga and the results will probably also be published practically live.
Also Bulgarian weightlifters will make their re-entry on the international stage. The selection of the athletes has not been without      discussion in the Bulgarian weightlifting world and some famous lifters(Demirev, Stoyanov,..) have been refused in the selection competition together with their coaches.Bulgarian responsible selected a team of very young athletes.

Interesting also are the World ranking lists 2008 to make a preview.

The A- sessions will be broadcasted on Europsport.

UPDATE: Tom GOEGEBUER European Champion in the men's 56 kg class competition
I became European Champion in the men's 56 kg class competition on sunday 5th of April.
With a snatch of 115 kg I set up a national record of 115 kg taking an advantage of 5 kg on the other lifters.
So we decided that making a succesfull clean and jerk with a weight so that nobody else could do 5kg more was our priority now.
Not anymore the clean and jerk medal or a national record. After a 136 kg jerk, the coaches decided not to try a national record of 138 kg but put 1kg more, estimating it would be enough. They proved to be right cause the Turkish lifter failed with 142 kg and I got the overall gold and the clean& jerk silver. Italian Vito Dellini took the gold in clean& jerk with 138kg. My total of 252 kg was also a national record.
It was the second European Championship title in the Belgian history. The last European title was won by Serge Reding in 1969!

European champion 56 kg

Other Belgian participant Sarah De Coster couldn't make the result she prepaired for in the -53 kg class women. She got her first attempts with 62kg snatch and 79 kg clean& jerk, but missed her attempts for the national records with 65 kg and 83 kg, ending in 15th place.
A full photo report will follow after the Championships.

The second round of the Belgian club championships took place in La Louvière, the south of Belgium.
Teams consist of 3 athletes and the Sinclair points are added. The team with the highest score after three rounds is national champion. My team, Royal Olympic Ghent had only 2 athletesin the first competition, so if we wanted a chance on the final win we needed a stronf team this time.
Our best lifters Tom Van Thienen, Luc Lammens and I were all lifting. Tom Van thienen ate well in order to take a national record in the -105 and weighed in at 95 kg. He snatched 126 kg setting a new national record and jerked 145 kg, giving a total of 271 kg also a new national record (307 Sinclair). I had just lifted the day before so i restricted myself to training lifts of 102 & 115 kg (327 Sinclair @ 58.1 kg). Luc Lammens was injured in the elbow but still made a good result with 110+137. His 247 kg total at a bodyweight of 81 kg were enough for 301 sinclair. Thus our first team made a great 935 Sinclair points, making up 178 points on the provisional leader PS Zaventem.

Our second team with beginners also did well.  Kenta Umegae (70+84 @ 61.5 bw - 223 Sinclair) and Artyom Voskanyan.
(81+95 @75 kg bw -221 Sinclair) and Bjorn De Neve ( @ 82 kg bw - 140 Sinclair points) made a teamscore of  585.56 sinclairpoints, enough for fifth position.
Results.

In this last round of the Geman Bundesleague South West, KSV Hostenbach is starting against the one place higher ranked club from Ladenburg. As Hostenbach has the lower average points, winning the competition would not mean switching places with Ladenburg. But anyway the team was fully prepaired to pleasure the home crowd and I also lifted, eventhough only one week before my European Championships.

I weighed in at 57.6 kg bodyweight but prived of food and after a three hour car trip I couldn't concentrate on the platform and missed my first two snatches with 110 kg making the home crowd very nervous. As I had been snatching a lot more on training I wasn't panicking and did what I had to do i nthe last attempt.
The clean & jerk went extremely well and after a very light 132kg  and 137 kg attempt I decided to go for an all time best at that bodyweight and even this 140kg was still very light. Very promising for next weeks European championships.
With a total of 250 kg I made a good 158 kilopoints (383.67 Sinclair )and also the club succeeded with a victory of  555 points (Ladenburg 505 points). result

This years European Union championships are organised in Poland - Ciechanow from 18-21 st March.
        Website: Results
In this round KSV Hostenbach overestimated the opponents of Weinheim and Felix Rupp didn't start cause he didn't feel very well and thought there was no chance to win. Unfortunately it turned out that he should have lifted cause we lost the competition with 521.2- 542.4 points with our weakest lifter making about 40 points less then Felix. Too bad.....

I weighed in at 58.9kg and eventhough being stronger my technics let me down again. I missed the first snatch of 113 behind, then overcorrected 114 and missed in front, showing in the third attempt wit an easy one that it is all about the technics. In the clean& jerk I started with two very easy lifts, 138 and 141kg so I decided to go for an all time best at this bodyweigth. I cleaned 144 kg very good, but over enthusiastic I missed the jerk. My total of 255 kg gave a good 159 kilopoint (380.32 Sinclair).

The first round of the Belgian club championships took place in Waregem.
Teams consist of 3 athletes and the Sinclair points are added. The team with the highest score after three rounds is national champion. My team, Royal Olympic Ghent had only 2 athletes lifting, beginners Kenta Umegae and Artyom Voskanyan.
Our best lifters Tom Van Thienen, Luc Lammens and I were all lifting in France at the same time so the goal was to end as close as possible to the leader.

Artyom made 154 kg total at 77.4 kg bodyweight in his first competition ever, with 72 snatch and 82 kg Jerk, giving him 192 sinclair points.Kenta Umega, improved a lot in his second competition and made a very good 63+87kg at 61.3 kg (217.9 sinclair).
Our 410 sinclairpoints were only good enough for fifth position with 317 Sinclair points distance from leader Zaventem. It will be hard to catch up, but like that we make it more exciting :-).
Results.

The men's finals were organised in the North of France in Amiens and the girl's finals took place one week earlier.
With three out of 5 teammembers slightly injured, it was unrealistic for Lille to hope to end in top three this year in the French Clubchampionships, so the goal was to lowered tot top 5.  I weighed in at  61.3 but had been feeling very tired after a few tough training weeks. Nonetheless I expected to lift better then in previuos competitions. My snatch however was very shaky and I missed 113, made 114 in the second and  missed 117 behind. The jerk was a bit better and I made 140 in the second attempt. 143 was not good enough to come out of the squat position. ASPTT Lille ended with 425.4points, giving 421 points average,a 5th place in the finall men's ranking highest class N1A

My Belgian clubmates Tom Van thienen and Luc Lammens also lifted in second National division. Tom made a new national record in the -94 kg class with a 267 total  (122+145 @ 89.7kg), while our injured master lifter Luc still totalled 247 kg (@ 82 kg).
Sarah De Coster lifted one week earlier in the women's best team of France  (64+84 @55.3kg )

Best male / female lifters

In this round we were facing the leaders of the second league South-West, so we didn't have a chance to win.
At a bodyweight of 61.0kg I snatched 113 and missed 116 twice. I jerked 139 kg in the second attempt without any problem but missed 141in the last. I couldn't make what I'm ready for cause I didn't take a rest because I have to lift next week again. My 148 kilopoints were the best of the evening anyway....

My team KSV Hostenbach made 496 kilopoints, a lot less then the winning 716 points of Speyer.

In the second part of the German club competition, othe clubs have their second encounters. In this round of the second league South west, we had to lift against the lowest ranked club Obrigheim II. As my German club KSV Hostenbach is ranked last but one, this competition was of major importance in order to avoid degradation.  That is why I decided this competition was ideal to test the effect of bodyweightloss on short term (usually moderate bodyweight gives higher points), so I went 50 min in sauna to loose more than kilo till 59.8kg bodyweight.
I snatched 109 and 113 very easily but due to a tchnical mistake I missed 116 kg. The jerk went similar with easy starters 133  & 137 kg followed by a missed jerk with 140kg. For the first time in this Bundesleague season I got 150 kilopoints.

My team KSV Hostenbach also made a new season's best with 553.4 kilopoints, largely enough to win the competition against Obrigheim II (451.8).

I started training for the European championships beginning of January so in the third round of the French club competition I was already a bit stronger. I weighed in at  60.8 and I snatched 115 (3 good lifts)  and jerked 137, missing 140. ASPTT Lille improved their result to 451.4points, giving 419 points average, and still in 5th place in the provisional ranking highest class N1A

My Belgian clubmates Tom Van thienen and Luc Lammens also lifted in second National division. Tom made a 258 total  (120+138) in his exam period at school, while master lifter Luc totalled 242 kg .
Sarah De Coster lifted one week earlier in the women's best team of France (62+82 @55.3kg )
In the popular Flemish magazine "Humo"  a few Belgian top athletes are portretted as "ancient Greek statues" in a decent nude photoshoot.
I'm one of them :-).

  •  2009-01-01: A strong & happy Newyear to all!

I took a complete break after the Olympics, that is why you couldn't find any updates for a while, but I'm continuing my international weightlifting career so from January you can expect more regular updates.

For now a short summary of the previous months.

In the second round of the French club competition I lacked a bit of feeling after a week without training in Greece. I weighed in at  62.1.(so lifting in -69 kg class :-) and I snatched 111 (114 wasn't far away)  and jerked 135. ASPTT Lille made a slightly better result 421.6 points and moved up to 5th place after the second round.

My clubmate Tom Van thienen, still a junior, made a new national record of 266kg total in -85 kg class (122+144), while lifting for Salaumines in the French competition.
From 24-29 the first World Championships for students under the International Students Sport Federation (FISU) took place in Komotini (Greece). Belgium had two competitors, Tom Van thienen (-85 kg) and Sarah De Coster (-53 kg), and I was coaching together with my training partner Luc Lammens.

As Tom, Luc and I missed our plane due to heavy snowfall, Tom had to travel all night the day before his competition.
A little bit tired thus, he couldn't make what he was ready for. Nonetheless he snatched 120 and jerked 137 kg clean& jerk, giving him 10th place.

Sarah De Coster made new national records -53 kg with 65 snatch and 82 kg clean and jerk. Her total of 147 kg was also the qualifying minimum for the European championships Seniors in 2009.

Full results

You can find a report on Sarah's Website.

In the first round of the French club competition I was eating before weigh-in so i made a new post-Olympic record of 62.0 bodyweight! I snatched 112 and jerked 135.  My club ASPTT Lille made a moderate start with 385.6 points, placing us 7th on 9 clubs in the heighest division.
In the fourth round of the German club competition I became very heavy (haha) with 59.5 bodyweight and I snatched 108 and jerked 134. Again we lost with 481 - 591.4 kilopoints against Ladenburg..
The third edition of the (renewed) BENELUX tournament, a competition between BElgium-NEtherlands-LUXemburg, was organised in Waregem Belgium. In the same time it counted for the Flemish championships. With 30 atlhetes competing, it was the biggest edition  (5 women, 4 youth athletes, 5 juniors, 12 seniors en 4 masters lifters).

The team ranking (best three athletes) was clearly won by the Belgian team with 974 Sinclair points België.
The team from the Netherlands made 868 Sinclair points beating the Luxemburg team that made 805.28 Sinclair. However these results need to be corrected, cause it turned out that the best lifter from the Netherlands, Tovmasjan Karen, had tested positive two months earlier (IWF site) and had no right to compete. Taking this into account the Netherlands made 805.81, just enough to stay before Luxemburg!

The best male and female performances came from Belgian athletes, with Olympic participant Tom Goegebuer making 344.19 Sinclair (105+131 at 61 bw.) and Sarah De Coster with  217.27 sinclair (60+78 at 54.7 kg).

..
In the third round of the German club competition I continued to progress (haha) till 108 and 132 at a bodyweight of 59.3. Our team was pretty weak so we lost with 363 - 574.6 kilopoints against Weinheim..
After some more beers, and a little extra bodyweight 59.2,  I lifted  a little more, 104 and 129 , but this time we lost  the competition in Speyer with 627.3 - 452.4 kilopoints.
After a complete break of a month and too much beers, I had my first competition in Germany for my club Hostenbach.
It was hard to do 100 and 128 at a bodyweight of  58.5 kg , but luckily it was enough to win the competition against Obrigheim II with 462.8 - 422.8 kilopoints.
As you probably already knew, my Olympic adventure was very succesfull.
On tenth of August I competed in the -56 kg class, ending thirteenth with a new national record of 251 kg total (114+137).

The French Olympic team was present, and from Spanin Lydia Valentin & Jose Navarro and me for Belgium.
It was a rather small competition with 5 women and 12 men competing, but the level was extra-ordinary.
Best woman was Lydia Valentin with 264 Sinclair and best in the men's was field the German super heavy Mathias Steiner with               454.7 Sinclair (201 snatch +250 jerk).             I weighed only 59.0 and snatched 112,115,118 kg and jerked 134, 139, 142 kg, making 389 Sinclair with 260 kg total.

Pictures of the perfectly organised competition.
* 40 athletes have already been suspended in 2008, and the names are published.
The IWF also announced that they can't withdraw olympic quota from countries wthat produced positive doping results, because it wasn't  a confirmed and voted rule by the IOC.

This is bad news for the individual athletes waiting for an Olympic ticket, cause these tickets could have been reallocated to them.
(Already it is very hard to qualify as an individual when the main qualification is done through team rankings), but IWF seems to put pressure on the countries to withdraw (partially) from the Olympics, which is a very important sign.

* 8 men and 3 women of the Bulgarian National squad delivered positive samples in an out of competition control and the federation would withdraw from Olympics. Bulgaria had 2 starting places for women and the maximum of 6 starting places for men. News

  • 2008-06-12: Olympic news
According to the Greek radio, Greece would be allowed to send lifters to the Olympics eventhough 5 men and 6 women tested positive in out of competition controls. They will have to pay a fine to IWF. Normally the IWF fixed 50.000 USD pro positive case, but the total fine would be limited to 400.000 USD. The case will be officially dealt with in the IWF congress during the Junior World championships in Colombia from 14th-21st of June.
Before delivering the positive tests Greece had earned 8 startingplaces at the Olympics (5 for men and 3 for the women).
Because nearly all of their toplifters will be suspended, the Greeks would only send 3 men and 1 woman to the Olympics.
If confirmed this would leave two extra olympic places for men and women to be reallocated.

If an NOC chooses not to use all qualification places obtained, or if individual qualification places cannot be allocated, the qualification places concerned shall be reallocated by the IWF with consideration to the Olympic Qualification Ranking List.
By 30 June 2008, the IWF will confirm the reallocation of unused quota positions.
This would leave an opportunity for lifters from smaller countries that didn't get a team qualification and also failed to get an dividual place by being ranked in top 15 (top 10 for Women) on the Olympic qualification list.
Another question is wether positive lifters are removed from these qualification lists (which would be logical cause they can not be qualified).

So far I heard following lifters would have earned an individual ticket:

women: Ruth Kassirye (Norway -58/-63kg), Cocos Roxana (Romenia -58), Romela Begaj (Albania -58), Weili Yu (Honkong -53), Genny Pagliaro (Italy -48), and Spain has to decide between Juan Estefania (-48) and Lidia Valentin (-75) and Armenia between Melinel Daluzyan (-63 kg), Nazik Avdalayan (69 kg) or Hripsime Khurshudyan (75 kg).

men: Victor Scerbatis (Latvia +105), Saleem Jaber (Qatar +105), Minasides Dimitrios (Cyprus -69), Manual Minginfel (Micronesia -62), Ibrahim Amirul Hamizan (Malasya, -56) and Hoang Anh Tuan (Vietnam -56),who is training in Bulgaria with coach Stefan Tupurov.

It seems that not all individual places for men (8 men / 7 women) will be filled up so the remaining places will be allocated by the IWF with consideration to the global interests of weightlifting.

Further on a few wild cards (6 men/ 4 women) are also allocated end of june.

Personally I really hope that I, as a silver medal winner at the European Championships, can get one of these last places.
  • 2008-05-29: Doping cases : Tom Goegebuer Silver in -56Kg !!!!
In the very strict dopingcontrols that have been conducted in the road to Beijing, already 41 weightlifters would have tested positive since January.
Not all names are published and not even all nations involved are known but what can be deducted from news going around:

Bad publicity for weightlifting once again, but on the other hand it is clear that the controls are effective and making the fight for the Olympic slots more honest. In sight of the Olympic qualification it is very exciting to wait for complete information.

Best in the men's field was Tom Goegebuer with 378 Sinclair (60.3 kg bw, 115 kg+142 kg)

  • 2008-05-25: French National Championships
The French national championships were held and it is possible to watch the competition on internet.
Most remarkable performance came from Ex-world Champion Dabaya with 150 snatch and 191 jerk in second attempts at only 72.8 kg bodyweight. Results on Polska Stanga.
Thor Cup 2008

The first open international Thor Cup, and IWF event, took place in Reykjavik on 17th of May.
Despite an unprecedented amount of prize money there were less lifters then expected by the organizers for several reasons.
11 male lifters turned up and 7 female. Nonetheless a few lifters of high international level turned up (first five male lifters made more than 330 sinclair).
In the female field European bronze medallist Yvonne Kranz from Germany excelled with 226.9 Sinclair and 210 kg total in the -75 kg class. In the male field it was me, also bronze European medallist, who took the overall title with 368.6 Sinclair points (113+138 at 60.45 kg bodyweight). I preceded European Championship 11th  Antti Everi from Finland who made 354.9 Sinclair.

The 39th' Asian Championships in Kanazawa City (Japan) are finished and full results can be found on IWF-website.

The results were surprinsingly lower than expected with results averagely less then the Europeans. The natioal Korean Championships and Chinese nationals however were of extremely high standard but Korea didn't participate and China only send a "B-team".

The following countries won Olympic tickets based on the team classification:

Women: INA - VIE - MGL - IND: 1 each

Men: UZB-TKM: 2 each, KGZ-IRQ- KSA : 1 each

Tom Goegebuer Bronze Medal Tom Goegebuer with bronze medals for Belgium!
Correction after Doping tests: SILVER (30/05/2008)

Serge Reding, Belgium's most succesful weightlifter ever, earned the last medal- a bronze in total (and silver in jerk), at the 1974 Senior European championships in Verona Italy. In 1975 Serge Reding died and Tom Goegebuer was born. A sign...?

Anyway in 2008, more than 30 years later,on 15th of April 2008, Tom managed to snap a bronze medal in snatch and a bronze in total, also in Italy. Serge Reding competed in the heaviest bodyweight class, Tom Goegebuer in the lightest (-56kg).
A nice story and a great reward for Tom after 10 participations in a row at European Senior Championships!

Unfortunately Tom couldn't make the total of  253kg that the Belgian Olympic Commitee asked in order to qualify for the olympics. After the starting weigths of 111 snatch and 133 clean and jerk, he went for this total with 115 and 138 but missed leaving him with only 244 kg total and a provisional 18th place on the Olympic qualification world ranking list.

These European senior championships were organised in the Italian holiday town Lignano Sabbiadoro from 14th till 22th of April. These continental championships were the last but two Olympic qualification events. Previously the Pan American and Oceania Championships took place.
The next Olympic qualification event are the Asian Continental championships (27.04-1.05) and the last one are the African Championships in South Africa.

In the European championships the following countries won Olympic tickets based on the team classification:

Women: TUR: 2, GER and FRA: 1 each  (Qualification/Women)

Men: ALB: 2, SVK: 2, HUN, LTU and ESP: 1 each (Qualification/Men)

Full results

The highest number of participants in the European Championships of this Olympic cycle were registered with 106 women competing from 27 different nations and 160 men from 34 nations!

This shows how effective and severe the dopingcontrols in weightlifting are. We can only hope that positive athletes will also be striked out of the Olympic qualification ranking lists even if there results were made before the positive test.

I think that also legally it would be impossible to defend that cheating athletes can prevent honest athletes to go to Olympics (by making them drop out of the first 15(men) / 10(women) on the ranking list .

SV Germanio Obrigheim became strongest club of Germany on 5/04/2008.

The finals of the French team championships were held in Besançon i nthe weekend of 22-23 March.
Several athletes that are going to compete in the coming European Championships were present.

I lifted at 57.9 kg bodyweight and snatched 117 kg (missed  120 behind). I jerked 140 kg, giving me a total of 257 kg.
My French club Lille ended in a splendid 3rd place overall!

Unfortunelately another doping scandal hit the weightlifting world.

According to the IWf and several newspapers 11 Greek national team members would have given a positive A-sample in an unannounced training control on 7th of March.

News story 1  2 3 4

From 14th till 17th of March, the Eueopean Union championships, open for athletes till 23 years, were organised in Forst (Germany). Results

Belgian Sarah De Coster  competed in the 53 kg class and I was coaching her. Haven't had time for my own report, but you can read Sarah's report  . With 140 kg total (62+78) she became 5th.

Last saturday, 8th of March, the last round of the German Bundesleaugue competitions took place. My German club KSV Hostenbach, and the opponent SV Germania Obrigheim II were sharing the last position in the second division Süd West, so it was a clear and stressing situation: defeat = degradation!

I had been in the training camp with the French team in Vittel and I wasn't completely fresh, but nonetheless in a good shape and I weighed in at 59.7 kg. I had a perfect day in the snatch with 113 kg, 117 kg and a very good 119 kg. The clean&jerk didn't go as planned. I started with 137 kg. With 141 kg I had the impression that the barbell wasn't loaded equally on both sides cause I was out of balance in the pull. Anyway, I catched the barbell very badly and came up heavily. It went black for my eyes, but I jerked it quite well but when I got my feet together "night came" and I fell down, just before the signal. No lift, bad luck. As we seemed to be certain to win the competition I asked for 142 kg and this time it went really easy making me cautionless for the jerk. I didn't concentrate and missed it. The 256 kg total (that should have been at least 260) were nonetheless good for 156 points.

Eventhough Obrigheim II succeeded in making there season's best with 598 points, Obrigheim-Hostenbach ended in favour of us y by also putting more than 20 points to our previous best till 621 points. The final ranking is a big relief to all, next season again Bundesleague II!

  •  2008-02-23: German Bundesleague:

On 23th of  Februar I had to compete for KSV Hostenbach in the second division Süd West of the German Bundesleague competition in the seventh round.

Last time we lost against Speyer with only two points, but this time Speyer was reinforced be former Armenian Chakojan Rafik In last years European Championships he was still competing for Armenia, but he got the German citizenship like his clubmate Artyom Shaloyan. On top of that they could also count on Armenian Amrean Hovhannes so it was already clear that we had no chance to win.

I quited the training camp in France shortly to compete and after a hard trainingsweek I my energy was a bit low. I started with 110 snatch, and had to repeat my second attempt wit 114 kg to do it right. The clean and jerk went as planned with 133, 138 and 141 kg.
My total of 255 kg at 60.7 kg bodyweight give me a reasonable 151 German Kilo points and Hostenbach - Speyer, ended  in favour of Speyer with 637.8 - 583.1.
The first round of the Belgian club championships took place in Seraing.
Teams consist of 3 athletes and the Sinclair points are added. The team with the highest score after three rounds is national champion. My team, Royal Olympic Ghent had 3 athletes lifting:  Chamoyan Hrajr, Bart Adins and junior Bart Vanthienen.
Our best lifters Tom Van Thienen, Luc Lammens and I were all lifting in France at the same time so the goal was to end as close as possible to the leader.

Bart Adins, came out of exams and had to be content with a for him moderate 72 snatch and 100 clean& jerk. His 172 kg total at 87.5 kg gave 200.13 sinclair points. Our first year junior Bart Van thienen, 79.6.kg, made a new PB with 71 kg snatch and 92 kg in the jerk.  His total added another 200.13 sinclair points. Hrajr Chamoyan made, nearly without training, a solid 105+120kg at 78.7 kg (277.99 sinclair).
Our 679 sinclairpoints were, as expected, not enough to win the first round but our second team did really well and ended 3rd with only 58.48 Sinclair points distance from leader La Louvière.
Results.

In the third round of the French Club competition ASPTT Lille could count on me to compete in the highest division N1A.
At this home competition I weighed in at 60.7 kg and made a perfect row in the snatch with 111, 115 and 118 kg.  In the clean I was still struggling a bit with the technics so I planned to lift moderately. I started with 135 and made a quite good 140 in the second attempt. Though, not heavy at all I missed the clean of 142 kg, confirming that I still have to work a bit on the clean and jerk. My 377.6 Sinclair points were good for the tenth place in the Sinclair overall ranking. Turkish Sudas Benjamin made the highest score (418.99) followed closely by Hennequin Benjamin (417,008).
ASPTT Lille is now in 4th place in the clubranking, immediately behind AAJ Blois

Two other Belgian lifters from my club were also liftin in France. Luc Lammens lifted at a bodyweight of 83.9 kg for the second team of ASPTT Lille in the third league N3 and reached a national total record (Seniors and masters +35) of  262 kg (117+145)in the -85 kg class!.
Tom Van thienen lifted in the second league N2 for Sallaumines and lifted 254 kg (117+137) at a bodyweight of  90.3 kg.

One weeks earlier the female teams were lifting.
Belgian Sarah De Coster lifted well with 6 good lifts, 62+82 at 54.4 kg for the Club La Ferte Milon and made the tenth best performance on Sinclair with 188.19.
.
After a 9 days training camp in Paris,  I started in the second round of the French Club competition for ASPTT Lille  in the highest division N1A.
I was feeling very tired and eventhough I got stronger I didn't succeed in lifting well.
I did a modest 111 snatch and 137 jerk and I missed 114+140 at a bodyweight of 61.9 kg.

Two other Belgian lifters from my club were also lifting. Luc Lammens lifted at a bodyweight of 85.6 kg for the second team of ASPTT Lille in the third league N3 and reached a total of  254 kg (114+140).
Tom Van thienen lifted in the second league N2 for Sallaumines and lifted 251 kg (112+139) at a bodyweight of  87.4 kg.

Two weeks earlier the female teams were lifting.
Belgian Sarah De Coster lifted well with 6 good lifts, 60+80 at 54.1 kg for the Club La Ferte Milon and made the tenth best performance on Sinclair with 183.76.

  • 2008-01-25 International Competition result
* The IWF Olympic Test event "Good Luck Beijing"  from 22/1 till 23/1 counted also as an  Individual Olympic Qualification Event.
Competitions were organized in the 2008 Beijing Olympic venue, under similar conditions to those at the coming Olympic Games. The Tournament took place in two women's (-53kg and +75 kg) and two men's (-56 kg and +105 kg) bodyweight categories with international lifters competing in the A sessions and only Chinese competitors in the B groups.
Most remarkable news is the come back of Mathias Steiner on the international stage. After his Olympic performance in the -105 kg class for Austria in 2004 he has been waiting to get the German Nationality. It took a little longer than expected but he made a noticed re-entry at nearly 140kg bodyweight with a good 193 kg snatch and 230 kg Jerk.

* The first IWF-tournament of the year was the yearly Copenhagen Cup on 19th of January.
Lifters from Danmark, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Poland and Germany were taking part.
Results

After a short rest,  I had to start in the first competition of the year for KSV Hostenbach  of the German Bundesleague competition.

At 59.8 kg my bodyweigth was still quite low and as the club had a small hope to win the competition against Weinheim, I tried to lift maximum. With 6 good lifts till 112 snatch and 140 clean&jerk it went very good, but in the end my reasonable 152 points  didn't bring us victory.
Hostenbach-Weinheim ended 575.2 points to 600.2 and we are still in a dangerous last but one position in the second division Süd West.

On 15th of  Decembre I did my last competition of the year for KSV Hostenbach in the second division Süd West of the German Bundesleague competition.

This competition against Obrigheim was of extreme importance for my German club, cause defeat could mean degradation at the end of the season, so everyone was well prepaired.
I also did an extra effort and lost two kilo in sauna so my bodyweight was only 57.4 kg. As it was very important to make a total I started low with 106 snatch, and went on with easy 110 kg and 114 kg snatch.  The clean and jerk went well with an easy 132,  and 138 kg. Unfortunelaty I just couldn't get out of the squat with 142 kg.
My total of 252 kg give me a good 160 German Kilo points and we clearly won the duel Hostenbach -Obrigheim  (598.4 - 310.7)

  •  16 Doping cases on World weightlifting Championships:
It took a while but today the IWF published the dopingtest results of the September World Championships.
As mentioned before, already before any test results had been published, 4 athletes had been disqualified.
SAIF Said Assad (-105 men, QAT), previously known as Angel Popov when he earned the Olympic silver Medal for Bulgaria in 2000, would have refused to submit to a dopingtest at training.
YAR Thet Pan (-69 women, MYA) also was disqualified for refusing a doping test after competition.
USSENBAYEV Mukhita (-69 men, KAZ) and THANT Zin Hnin (-53 women, MYA) were disqualified after an attempt to manipulate their urine samples.

On top of that 12 other lifters have been tested positive. According to Polish newssite Polska Stanga there would also be three Bellarussians that would risk to be suspended but details are not known yet.

List of all 16 offenders.
THANT Zin Hnin 88 MYA 53 kg W dsq for refusal doping test
THAW Yae Faw 86 MYA 58 kg W 7th place
BAGAUTDINOVA Kamilya 84 KAZ 58 kg W 11th place

Mohammed Haider DAKHIL
70 IRQ 105+ kg M No total

This will also have some changes in the Olympic qualifications but the list are not yet published.

On one side this proves that the dopingcontrols have their effect, but it also shows that many countries still keep taking to performance enhancing drugs. About 150 dopingtests have been done on the World Championships resulting in about 10% positive cases. So we can estimate that if all 633 participants in the World Championships would have been tested (245 women and 388 men) it would proabbaly result in about 63 positive cases.

Knowing that dopingtest don't have a detection rate of 100% (countries that use doping knwo that they are going to be tested and they use drugs that can't be detected (or at least not always) so the real use of doping must be clearly more than 10%.

Still a long way to go in the doping fight, and new ideas to punish offenders have to developped.
Some people think that it could be effective to ban the representatives from recidiving countries from the executive commitees and other positions in the international federations in order to ensure that national antidoping programs are constructed efficiently everywhere.

Personally, I believe that open information about positive cases is maybe more efective.
When countries come repeatedly in a bad news for dopingoffence at a certain moment the authorities of these countries start to care about the negative publicity and start there own internal fight.
It is also important that doping use gets a negative image, which is not always the case in countries with a "doping culture".
The pressure and influence of the media can not be underestimated in this, therefore the international and national federations should be have a policy of not hiding the positive cases. The German Weightlifting federation is one of the leading federations in this aspect, publishing immediatley every lifter that has broken the rules.

The Netherlands wanted to organise Benelux Championships 2007 (between BElgium&NEtherlands and LUXemburg) but as there hasn't been an agreement yet between the three countries about the rules and mode of organisation? Belgium and Luxemburg call it tournament instead of championship. The invitation for the competition came very late (just 4 weeks before) and originally a high entry fee was planned. All of this lead to very few participants, so hopefully the agreement between the countries will be ready by next year!

Mita Overvliet (organiser of the Thor Cup and winning the 69 kg class here) invited female toplifter Ruth Kasirye from Norway and she made a international result of  250.7 Sinclair by doing her training lifts of 90 snatch and 116 jerk (at 60 kg bodyweight).

My club team was also present with very good performances.
Bart Van thienen, our youth lifter made 185.6 Sinclair (62+85  at 74.5 kg bodyweight) missing his records with 69 and 90 kg.
His junior brother Tom Van thienen took the second place overall with 300.2 Sinclair (114+140 at 85.6 kg bodyweight).
Our Master lifter, Luc Lammens took the third place overall with 297.4 Sinclair (110+140 at 84.5 kg bodyweight)

And yes, I took the overall title of best lifter with 392.5 Sinclair and three (snatch&jerk and total) national records!
After a diet of 8 weeks I got down to the 56 kg class, weighing only 55.5 kg.
I started with 109 kg followed by 113 kg. The third attempt with 115 kg was surprisingly high but I made a small technical mistake and the barbell fell behind me in the end.
The clean and jerk went fine with two good lifts, 132 kg followed by 137 kg.
The same mistake as a few weeks ago, straigthening my legs too fast, made me miss the last attempt with 140kg.
Nonetheless my 250 kg is a very satisfying result of high international level (4th place European championships 2007, 2nd 2006) and only 3kg below the Olympic limit demanded by the Belgian Olympic Committee and at this moment a 15th place on the Individual Olympic Qualification  World rankinglist! So this result should be enough to get the support from the Belgian Olympic Committe and the gouvernemts sportssupport organ BLOSO.

His brother Tom Van thienen took the junior title with 294.38 Sinclair (113+137 at 86.27 kg bodyweight).
In total 27 athletes were lifting from Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands in this youth tournament.

On 11th of  Novembre I competed for KSV Hostenbach in the second division Süd West of the German Bundesleague competition in the 4th round.

I started with my club against the club from Speyer, that started as one of the favorites at the season. It turned out however that they had two foreigners lifting, which isn't allowed. So suddenly they were making 80 points less and there level was within reach of my club so it promised to be a hard fight.

My bodyweight was only 57.5 kg and after a hard trainingsweek I decided to start low and try to make 6 good lifts. I started with 105 snatch, and went on with easy 110 kg and 112 kg snatch.  The clean and jerk was even easier with 125, 131 and 135 kg.  At that time we were still in front of Speyer. In the last attempt their Armenian athlete Hovhannes had to jerk 10kg more to take them to the lead. He just succeeded so we lost with only two points.
My total of 247 kg give me a good 155 German Kilo points but we the duel Hostenbach - Speyer, ended  in favour of Speyer (575.8 - 577.8)

  •  2007-11-03:   Flemish championships and National Master Championships

The championships of the Dutch speaking part of Belgium were organized in Merelbeke
My bodyweight was 58.7 kg and I just participated as a training. I did power snatches till 100 kg and moderate heavy clean&jerks till 137 kg, still enough to become best lifter overall with 355.8 Sinclair.
The second best lifter and best Master Overall was my trainingpartner Luc Lammens. In the class till 85 kg he snatched 116 kg and jerked 142 kg (307.32 Sinclair).
The best youth lifter (till 16years) came also from our club KOG with 189.2 Sinclair. Bart Van thienen made a personal best in the class till 77kg with a 62 kg snatch and a 88 kg jerk. The jerk and the total were also Flemish youth records.
And coincidence or not, the best junior was also from our club. His older brother Tom Van thienen made 285.89 Sinclair with only two good attempts, a snatch of 111kg and a jerk of 133 kg in the 85 kg class.
Best woman was Sarah De Coster who made a come back after a back injury with 45 kg snatch and 70 kg jerk in the 53 kg class.

On 27th of Octobre the third round of the German Bundesleague competitions went on in several parts in Germany.
As in previous years I'm competing for KSV Hostenbach in the second division Süd West.

I started with my club against the club from Heinsheim, one of the strongest clubs in the second division.
Hostenbach - Heinsheim, ended  to 581.2 - 600.2 points.

My bodyweight was only 58.5 kg.  I missed 112kg snatch in the first attempt but proved with my second attempt that it was just a small mistake and 116kg in the third also was good.
In the the clean and jerk I made two perfect and easy attempts with 135 and  140 kg. I used other knee wraps and wanted to try if it helped to put them tighter for my last attempt with 144kg.  It didn't work out as I thought, cause it made my straighten my legs to fast and the bar slid down of my shoulders in the squat. Nonetheless my total of 256 kg delivered me a good 160 German Kilo points which places my provisionally in the 5th place overall (in the whole German Bundesleaugue).

The 2008 edition of the Thor Cup (see report 2007) will be an open tournament counting for the IWF world ranking list and is planned between 15 and 19th of may (IWF Calender 2008).

The organiser Mita Overvliet has asked me to inform everybody that there will be an unpreceded price money of 1500 USD in every class (for the first three in every of the 8 male and 7 female bodyweightclasses, probably 800 dollars for the 1st, 500  for the second and 200 for the third). On top of that there will be money for the best lifters on sinclair points.

Official invitations will be sent later and I'll put a copy on my website.

As Polish newssite published, Olympic lifter Alan Naniyev, brought some schocking news for APA-sport.
He claims that he has lifted in last years world championships with a fals pasport for Azerbeidjan, and is mentioning the possibillity of another lifter (that would also have gained medals as a junior, while not anymore a junior).
If it this can be proven it might have consequences for the olympic qualification of Azerbeidjan.
According to the newspapers, Khachatur Kapanakstyan, multiple medal winner on European and World Championships and a world record of 171.5 snatch in 76kg class, and coach for Armenia in the last years has been killed in a car accident just after the World Championships.
He was not only known as a great athlete, but also as a funny and pleasant guy. The weightlifting community will certainly miss him.
From 9-13th the best of European's juniors will lift in Tenerife.
You will be able to find the results on the officicial website (problems with Firefox browser to read the page!)
- Read  my personal photoreport on these world championships.
I made a very dissapointing result wit 268 kg total and a 27th place.

-The main team qualifications have been made also and the countries who can send 6,5,4 and 3 male athletes to the Olympics are known as well as the countries that can send 4, 3 and 2 female lifters.
Qualification list men, Qualification list female.
In the continental Championships next year some countries that didn't get any quota can still earn a maximum of two places for the male and 1 (2 in Europe) for the female. (Qualification rules).

Athletes from "weak" weightliftingcountries without any places can earn an exceptional ticket by being in top 15 of a special worldranking list 1 athlete pro country.
It is a little bit weird that the IWF hasn't already published the Individual world ranking qualification lists yet. As I have to qualify myself by being in the top 15 I made the lists for the -56 kg and the -62 kg and in -56 kg class a 15th place is now 249 kg total and in -62kg it comes to 280kg.

- I did a little statistics on the results of the last three pre-olympic qualification world championships...
Even though these WC had very high level and many participants, the Athens 1999 records in participation were not matched.
In the men's competition 297 lifters from 59 countries took part (compared to Athens 345 lifters from 63 countries). 208 female lifters from 47 countries fought for Olympic qualification (compared to 231 lifters from 39 countries in Athens 1999).

The trend of continuously higher levels of the female lifters seems to slow down a bit.
The statistics show that the level of the last two pre-olympic world championships is comparable (as well in the upper regions as in  the lower):

In the men's divisions we can see that the top results are considerably lower than in 1999 and a bit lower than in 2003, probably pointing to the effect of WADA.
Interesting to notice is that the midsection results are about the same as in 2003 and the places around the 30st place are even from the same level as in 1999, pointing out that the density of the results is higher than ever.

  •  Doping cases on World weightlifting Championships:

Already before any test results have been published, 4 athletes have been disqualified.

SAIF Said Assad (-105 men, QAT), previously known as Angel Popov when he earned the Olympic silver Medal for Bulgaria in 2000, would have refused to submit to a dopingtest at training. One hour later he came back to submit himself to the test, but in the meantime the IWF disqualified him from the competition. Refusal of a test can be sanctioned with a two year ban.

Eventhough the antidoping control is more severe than ever it clearly shows that the fight is not won yet. Without pointing to specific countries or athletes, it is quite clear for insiders that quite a lot of athletes/countries have again turned to illegal aides in order to qualify for the Olympics.

A thorough examination of the results shows very suspiciuos elements. A natural lifter has quite regular progresses. In the starting years of a junior lifter a progress of 20 kg in a year (without changing bodyweight) is quite good but once on a level of a World Championship such a progress is very rare. Seeing several lifters from a country progressing with 20 to even 40kg in less than a year is very questioning. Similar, performing 10 kg less than before is very normal, but some lifters seem to drop down from time to time with 30 to 40 kg total without any visible reason....

In the world championships of 2005 one gets a 10th place with 257 kg total, in 2007 the same total only reaches for a 32nd place. Ofcourse the world championships in 2007 are more important, but wasn't anyone of those twenty potential lifters interested to be in that top ten??? 5th place was 286 kg total, this year only 11th.
There are ofcourse other factors that can explain, but all together it is clear that doping use has not dissapeared yet.

I don't want to put my beloved sport in a bad ligth but I think that it has been proven that other sports suffer the same "desease" and the worst thing that could happen is what happened to cycling in the "Tour de France"...
It is better to continously fight against it and regularly get some positve cases than having an enormuos scandal in the Olympics. Besides I really want a more honest chance for the clean lifters.

So I want to keep the debate going on, in order to get even more efficient dopingcontrols. I'm thinking especially of the surprise effect of the controls. It seems that even half an hour can be sufficiently to manipulate ones urine, so leaving the athletes out of sight or anouncing the doping control a little before arrival won't have much effect. (One also has to think about the countries were a visa is required to come, so that by applying for a visa the federations might be warned already....)

These championships, dedicated to King Bhumibol's 80th birthday, are the 76th for Men and 19th for Women.
This is the second Olympic qualification event and therefore the number of participants will be extremely high.
The inscription list is also pointing to a very dense level with as much as 281 females and 430 male lifters.
(Remark that a few reserve lifters can't compete).
In the 69 kg class men there are as many as 74 inscriptions!

I will be lifting in the 62 kg class as always (18th of September).
The preparation has been extremely good and when everything goes right I should be able to surpass my best total ever.
Looking at the entry list however, I can't be very confident to reach a superb place.
Actually a top 12 is demanded by BLOSO in order to be sure to be supported next year also and the Belgian Olympic Committee even wants a top 10 (or 285 total) for the Olympics but considering  my 23th place (on 58!) on the preliminary list this seems to be a extremely hard task. However the final entry list can differ a lot and in last year's world championships with a similar entry list the tenth place turned out to be 280kg but a 15th place was still 276 kg.
One thing is sure, every missed attemp wil make an athlete slide down a few places and the difference between 2 good lifts and six good lifts can easily be ten places.
So I can easily end in 20th position but top 12 is not impossible either.
Anyway I'm planning not to think too much and just focus on my own lifts and hope to be in the top 15 one pro country on the world ranking list afterwards cause that is the international limit for my Olympic qualification and if I don't fullfill that one than there is no point in thinking about other limits...

For results I advice to check out the IWF website, the Eleiko news agency,  Marek's site and ofcourse the official site.
Wish me luck!
  •  Rezazadeh not going to the World Championships:
Surprisingly Rezazadeh announced that he will not be able to lift in the World Championships due to an injury after a car accident (originally he would have said that he had no injury at all) according to a newsagency
  •  Doping cases:
- The WADA out of competition control have found a few positive B-samples according to the  IWF website:

ALB - 3 male lifters
BLR - 1 female lifter
MEX - 1 female lifter
BUL - 1 female lifter
IND - 1 male lifter

Because three Albanian lifters would have tested positive they risk a doping fine of 50.000 USD in order to be able to participate in the coming World championships and Olympic Games!
According to TV-IBC news  the three concerned lifters would be Endri HAXHIHYSENI , Isa BALI and Mirjana LOCI following WADA controls on 7th of july and 25th of August (testing positive on testosterone).

- The list of suspended lifters was also  updated  on the
IWF website:
Combined with the previuos WADA results this leaves BLR and ECU with two positive females, and EGY with two positive males, so one positive test extra would also leave them with a 50.000 USD fine.

- Kenyan weigthlifter David Obiero received a two year ban following a positive out -of competition test according to a newspaper.

  •  German world championship qualification results:
After the first qualification competition the Germans had a second test and the team for Thailand will be Andre Winter und Artiom Shaloyan (69 kg), Renè Hoch (77 kg), Michael Böhm (85 kg), Tom Schwarzbach (85 kg/Reserve), Jürgen Spieß and Rene Horn (94 kg), Jörg Mazur (105 kg) and Almir Velagic (+105 kg). The two female lifters will be Sarah Blasnik (53 kg) und Yvonne Kranz (75 kg).
The results can be found on the official website men / women
  •  World Cup Students:
The official site has some information but results can be checked on the IWF site.

  •  2007-08-04:   World Championships test competitions
On 4th of August the French National team and the German National team had a test for the coming World Championships in September.

- I took part in the French test competition while I was also there for the trainingcamp.  The French team and me in Vittel.
French weightlifting team
It was only a test so we had been training hard all week and I had been doing sets of snatches with 115 and sets of clean&jerks till 140 so I was pretty tired. Nonetheless I made a promessing total of 270 kg total at a bodyweight of 62.6 kg. I made two good snatch lifts, 118 and 123. My head wasn't ready for 125kg and I made a pull with it. In the clean I did eaqually with two good lifts  at 142 and 147 kg. I decided not to force and didn't try more.
It gave me 381 sinclair points.

- The results of the German test competition can be found on: Eleiko news

  •  Doping cases:
The list of IWF suspended competitors can be found on IWF website.
On the All African Games in Algiers three lifters would have tested positive
All African Games in Algiers in weightlifting:
- Blassed Udoh (NGR, -48 kg women, 3rd place)
- Hadiza Zakae (NGR, -75 kg women, 1st place)
- Botuwa Menyakoko (COB, -94 kg Men ,6th place.

The results of these African games can be found here

  •  World Championships Juniors:

  •  Competitions results:
- Small Nations Tournament 2nd of June
Belgian team (Tom Goegebuer, Luc Lammens, Nicky Van Wemmel, Tom Van thienen)  reached
second place in the open Small nations tournament.
Tom Van thienen made a new national junior snatch record with 114 kg.
I lifted 117+143 kg  at a bodyweight of 62.2 kg which gave me 373.77 sinclair.
The tournament was won by Cyprus.
Results

- Belgian championships 26th of may: results
I became overall champion with 115+135 at a bodyweight of 61.4 (362.8473 sinclair)

- 4´th International Eleiko Austrian Women´s Grand Prix 2007  (Austria) from 18-19th of may:
Ruth Kasireye from Norway won the tournament with 250.5 Sinclair points, beating the Austrian Heidi Neubacher (227 sinclair).

- Finland won the 2nd Tor Cup (Iceland) 18th of may
The competition setup is a special formula to promote the sport in Nordic countries.
The concept came from David Goldstrom and the organisation is done by Mita Overvliet.
Five teams from Norway,Sweden, Iceland, Denmark and Finland have to fight for the title by making the highest total.
Each teams consists of three lifters with a maximum total bodyweight of 280 kilo (a "lightweight", "middleweight" and a "heavyweight" lifter). In this way the public can easily see which team is on the winning hand. The competition itself is organised in a large shopping mall and is broadcasted on the Icelandic television. The best team received 3000 Euro and all the other teams also received money prices
I have been helping to build up the platform and I competed so I have a nice and  informative photoreport.

- Finals of the German Bundesleague 2006-2007 12th of may:
Samswegen won the competion clearly with 977.2 kilopoints for Obrigheim (960.6), and Chemnitz (800.2). Results

The 19th Women's and 38th Men's Asian Cahmpionships took place in Tai-an, China.
Most remarkable was the setting of three World records jerk in the female field by Chinese women (-48kg 120 jerk, 53 kg 129 jerk, -63 kg 141 jerk). The big gap between the snatch and the jerk seems to be general for the Chinese women, pointing out an exceptional strength.

My club KSV Hostenbach was still in the last but one position in the second Bundesleaugue division Süd-West, and a defeat against Ladenburg with more than18 points would lead to a degradation to third league.
Only three days after my European championships I wasn't to keen on lifting but I had no choice than to help my German club.

My bodyweight was 62.8 kg.  I made a fairly easy 112 kg snatch and then missed surprisingly twice with 115 kg (or wasn't it so surprisingly after the post EC party :-). After the snatch we had a 13 points advantage but when one of our lifters got injured in the warm up for the jerk all looked suddenly very negative. Instead of starting with 130 kg, i decided then to start 140, followed with 145 kg.  I even cleaned 148 kg quite well but I lacked energy to finish the jerk. My 145 kilopoints were second best of the evening, in the end it didn't lead us to the victory. The competition Hostenbach-Ladenburg ended 556.7 to 563 points.
This left Ladenburg and Hostenbach each with 1 competion won in this season, but Hostenbach having a higher average score and thus avoiding degradation! End score Bundesliga Südwest
Nonetheless , KSV Hostenbach made the 19th best club result in all Germany this season.

In the overallranking I ended as 16th best lifter in the Bundesleague season with 160 kilopoints.

From 15th till 22th the 86th  Men's European championships and 20th women's  competitions were organized in France.

The results can be found on the  website from the organizing committee

These championships were my 9 th European senior championships.
I had a normal competition (272 kg total) but my 11th place was quite dissapointing.

Sarah De Coster lifted in her first senior Championships
You can find Sarah's report on her website

My club KSV Hostenbach is still in the last but one position in the second Bundesleaugue division Süd-West, so a victory against Weinheim was desirable.

My bodyweight was 64.0 kg (after a meal) and less than 3 weeks from the European Championships, I didn't really want to force.  I made two good snatch lifts till 120 kg. I nearly snatched 124 but I didn't lock my arm properly and lost it. I made three easy jerks till 145 kg.  My 150 kilopoints were second best of the evening, but in the end it didn't lead us to the victory. The competition Heinsheim-Hostenbach ended 588.4 to 603 points.

Only one week after my last competition I started again for ASPTT Lille in the first division, were 9 teams are fighting for the title of strongest club.
I had two good snatch lifts, 118 and 122 but missed 124kg. In the clean and jerk I started 140, but I lost my balance a bit and had to make a step in the squat. I jerked the weight without problem but probably something moved in my back. I cleaned 146 easily but while coming up I felt a sudden pain in the back and dropped the weight. I stopped the competition immediately to take no risk.
My bodyweigth was 63.6 kg bodyweight, so i made 134.8 French points and 370.65 sinclair points which put me in 11th position in France Individual ranking.

We ended 5th place in the final  ranking with 445 points on the average.

World Champion Dabaya Vencelas made a superb 147+190 at a mere bodyweight of  72.9 kg

My club KSV Hostenbach is still in the last but one position in the second Bundesleaugue division Süd-West, so a victory against Weinheim was desirable.

My bodyweight was 63.0 kg and less than 5 weeks from the European Championships, I expected to bring a lot better performance than in the previuos competitions. And indeed, I made three good snatch lifts till 122 kg. As I'm still not sure how much my knee tendon can take I wasn't plaanning to clean more than 145 kg. After my second jerk with 142 kg however we were 10 kg behind with only two lifters from my team with a last lift. So I was kind of obliged to take 147 kg. This weight didn't pose me any problems either so I totalled 269 kg. My 157 kilopoints were also best of the evening, but in the end it didn't lead us to the victory. Wen the last lift from the competition from teammate Panchev with 176 kg failed the competition Weinheim-Hostenbach ended 595 to 586 points.
The second round of the Belgian club championships took place in Seraing.
Teams consist of 3 athletes and the Sinclair points are added. The team with the highest score after three rounds is national champion. My team, Royal Olympic Ghent had 5 athletes lifting: the first team Luc Lammens, Chamoyan Hrajr and Tom Van Thienen and in our second team Mussa Elmurzayev and schoolboy Bart Van thienen.

Luc Lammens will be competing next week so he took it easy with 110 snatch and 130 clean& jerk. His 240 kg total at 83.5 kg gave 287.27 sinclair points. Our junior Tom Van thienen, 89 kg, made a new PB snatch with 110 kg and made a new Belgian junior jerk record with 136 kg making 285.38 sinclair points.  Hrajr Chamoyan made 105+125kg at 79.8 kg (282 sinclair).
Our 854.65 sinclairpoints was, as expected, enough to win also the  second round with nearly 55 sinclair points over PS Zaventem and 133 sinclair over Seraing.
Results.
I competed again for ASPTT Lille in the first division, were 9 teams are fighting for the title of strongest club.
After this round we are one place higher on the ranking with the 5th place.
We made 456.8 points, the 4rd best result in the 3rd round.

I had three good snatch lifts, 112, 116, 118 kg. In the clean and jerk I did 132, 138 but I lost my balance with 141.
The reason of this is ofcourse that I haven't done any squat cleans in the last 8 weeks to let my knee injury heal.
I'm pretty confident I 'll lift more soon.
My bodyweigth was pretty high after a big lunch in a restaurant so with 64.2 kg bodyweight, I only made a moderate  127.6 French points and 359.7 sinclair points. Individual ranking

  • 2007-02-15: Doping News
- New developments in doping controls:
From 2008 on dopingcontrols will reveal the use of Human Growth Hormons
In the future databases from the athletes will be put in place with their levels of certain substances that can change when taking        drugs.   So any changes in an athletes profile will be suspect and can be examined further on.
- News came that at least three indian weightlifters tested positive on the national championships (1, 2).
The IWF just lifted a sanction on the Indian federation for previous similar problems.
The first round of the Belgian club championships took place in Waregem.
Teams consist of 3 athletes and the Sinclair points are added. The team with the highest score after three rounds is national champion. My team, Royal Olympic Ghent had 5 athletes lifting: the first team Luc Lammens, me and Tom Van Thienen and in our second team Chamoyan Hrajr and schoolboy Bart Vanthienen.

Luc Lammens will be competing next week so he took it easy with 110 snatch and 127 clean& jerk. His 237 kg total at 84.3 kg gave 282.3 sinclair points. Our junior Tom Van thienen, 88.5 kg, made a new PB snatch with 109 kg but only succeeded in his first jerk with 124 kg making 271 sinclair points. I only made a light training, recovering from the flew and knewing that I have to lift next week again in France. So I made a modest 100 snatch and 120 kg clean and jerk at a bodyweight of 61.7 kg. I added another 318 sinclair points.
In our incomplete second team Hrajr Chamoyan made a solid 100+120kg at 81.2 kg (267 sinclair). Our youth lifter Bram van thienen made his first competition with 4 good lifts 50+70 at 77.5 kg bodyweight (149.55 sinclair).

Our 871 sinclairpoints was, as expected, enough to win the first round with nearly 80 sinclair points over PS Zaventem and 153 sinclair over Seraing. Our second team placed 7th.
Results.

My club KSV Hostenbach is now in the last but one position in the second Bundesleaugue division Süd-West.

In the home competition against leader Altrip we had no chance at all and Hostenbach - Altrip, ended 526.6 to 636.6 points.
My bodyweight was only 62.6 kg and I was already in better shape then one week before. I snatched 110 and 115 and made a pull with 118 kg (in training I hadn't been surpassing 107.5 kg yet).
As I have a fissure (miniscule rupture) in my patella, of the right knee this time, I have to be very careful in the clean so I started with a low and easy 129 kg followed by 134kg and 137kg.
My total of 252kg, which gave me 140 German Kilo points, was the second best result of the evening.

I'm competing for ASPTT Lille in the first division, were 9 teams are fighting for the title of strongest club .
They lift against each other, grouped by three clubs, with teams consisting of 5 athletes. The points (total - double bodyweight) of the 4 best athletes are added. The club with the highest average after 4 rounds will be national champion.

As I just started my preparation I wasn't in a very good shape yet and above that I'm again suffering from a small rupture in my patella tendon of the right knee.
My bodyweight was 61.7 kg and my first snatch of 108 kg went completely wrong but in the second attempt it proved to be really easy. My third attempt with 112 kg was also right.
Because of my knee injury in the clean&jerk I had to start low. I made three succesful lifts with 127kg, 132 kg and 135 kg.
My 247 kg total gave me a rather low 357.2 Sinclair points (123.6 French points) which places me 16 th in the overall ranking.

Currently Clermont Sport is in the lead with a monster score of 579.50 points, followed by  Girondin Bordeaux with 537.5  and Française Besancon with 472.6 points. Current Ranking.
ASPTT Lille is only ranked 6th with 429.2 because I couldn't compete in the first round and because Eric Bonnel is injured.

My Belgian clubmate Luc Lammens made 100 snatch and 130 clean and jerk at a bodyweight of 84.1 for the second team of ASPTT Lille (in second division).

Other Belgian lifter Sarah De Coster made a new national record in the female club competition. At a bodyweight of 53 kg she made 138 kg total.
  •  2006-12-31:  Happy Newyear!
As I couldn't compete in the third round while I was in training camp with the Olympic commitee my club KSV Hostenbach also lost the third competition. Therefore it was extremely important to win this roundto be able to stay in the second Bundesleaugue division Süd-West.

We did make it against Ladenburg but it was closewith Hostenbach - Ladenburg, ending 563.9 to 547.6 points.
My bodyweight was only 60.7 kg and I wasn't really in topshape anymore. But I did what I had to do and snatched 112, 116 and 119 kg.
I started the clean with an easy 140 kg. The second jerk with 145 kg was also ok, but the third with 148 kg wasn't teechnically perfect so I caught the weight badly and it hurted my knee so I dropped it.
Anyway, a pretty decent total at the end of this season of 264kg, which gave me 160 German Kilo points, the best result of the evening.
Results 15th Asian Games in Doha.
Finally you can read my photo report on the senior World Championships from October.
  • The Belgian Olympic Commitee organised a training camp for all sportsmen in the Belgian Olympic team in Sevilla from 6th till 13th of November.
Around 50 athletes from Cycling, Judo, BMX, Athletics, Taekwondo, Thriatlon, Canoe, Rowing and weightlifting were present in the sunny south of Spain.
The press was present and the selectionlimits for the Olympics were presented.
I was also there and I will put a short report on this in the near future.

  • 2006-11-04:   BENELUX championships
The NOGB (Dutch Weightlifting  Federation) decided to organise the championships of the BENELUX (Netherlands, Belgium and Luxemburg) in Amsterdam. As the Belgian federation found they saw it too much as a private organisation instead of a mutual colobaration and decisionmaking between the three involved federations, they didn't recognise them as "our Benelux" championships, which was also the reason that there were very few Belgian lifters.
Nonetheless 20 male lifters and 6 females competed.
Luc Lammens, my trainingpartner, took the overal title men Benelux with 250 kg total in the 85 kg class.
The open overall title went to Andrew Goswell from Wales with 361 sinclair points.
Other Belgian lifter Sarah De Coster made a new Belgian record jerk of 80kg in the -53 kg class. Her total of 139 kg is also the national record. She won the overall title women Benelux and Open.
More results.
