Sexual differences |
The difference between male and female is not always very clear. With juveniles the difference is almost not visible. Getting together a hole group of juv. together and comparering them may help you on your way, but it will not garantee that you will get the right gender. Only a trained eye and an expert can sex juveniles, and still then they are mistaken sometimes.
These are a few differences that can be spotted immediately, but this is not the case for al turtles.
- Elongated front claws by males
- Thicker tale of the male. Its cloaca is further away from the marginal rim while the females is near the carapace.
- The plastron is concave and more indented.
- The anal plates of the plastron may differ in size and shape.
- With some species, females are much larger than males.
