CITROËN 11BL

Home Rick

This Traction Avant 11BL légère was built in 1953 in Belgium. It's got a 1911cc engine - top speed is about 105 km/h (52 mph). A lot of these cars were built in France. A small number was built in Belgium in the Forest factory (near Brussels), where Citroën has been constructing cars since the 30's.

We're still "testing" the car; some parts needed to be replaced. You might be surprised to hear that this car easily keeps up with modern traffic. It doesn't have a super-fast gearbox, but it'll do. It just takes some time to get used to it! Driving this thing is absolutely crazy.

Everytime we hit the road, people stare at us (that is, at the car). This car seems to attract even more attention than the Peugeot 203 did! Some people are extremely enthousiastic, a lot of others just get jealous...

Riding the Traction Avant is ever so funny. Most of these cars are used for special occasions, ceremonies and marriages. This one's different: it's insured as a "normal", second car, for everyday use.
Sitting in a car like this feels pretty much like going back to the future. After all, the first Tractions have been built in the 30's, so when you bought one 20 years later, it was already VERY outdated! The Peugeot 203 is much "newer", compared to the Traction Avant.

The engine runs very smoothly, nothing wrong with that. But the car did let us down a few times... And that's not funny at all! It preferred to do so in the middle of a roundabout, and again in difficult situations.
Luckily there's always people around who understand the situation; good to know!
