Urbain's Nautical Page

A maritime information page from Belgium

This page is a humble addition to the already manifold and often excellent maritime related pages on the Internet.

I would like to spill some information on specifically but not exclusively European nautical matters of a historical and contemporary elan. I am especially pointing my arrows at World Ship Society members and the many other quiet researchers in Europe who seriously contribute to the recording of maritime history as a hobby.

But most of all I would like to receive reactions, contributions and suggestions for this page adding to its contents and enhancing its value.

Anybody interested or do you want to see your own maritime link added ? Submit your comments by email. You are welcome.

Let's start maybe with a bit of Belgian maritime comments in the BELNEWS PAGE

The AKUNA entered life as a warship, a corvette in WW II in fact.

In 1943 she was delivered as GLADSTONE from the Walker Ltd. yards in Maryborough.

She served in the Royal Australian Navy till 1957 when the twin triple expansion steam ship was acquired by the Port Phillip Sea Pilots and renamed AKUNA. In April 1975 she was transferred to Sydney and In 1976 to Brisbane. In September 1977 she was sold to "Escape from the Ordinary" but the sale fell through and she was re possessed. In September 1978 she was then sold to Food for The Hungry International (Vancouver). She operated out of Singapore after her delivery there in October 1978. In 1981 she was named BAMBOO CROSS and still operating as refugee relief vessel out of Singapore. Much of this information was kindly sent in by Mr.Alan Maggs, Australia.

For many shiplovers or shipphotographers, reefer ships are still a thing of beauty. Although the increasing number of containers on eck of reeferships and even loads of second-hand busses and trucks do not enhance their appearance, the so-called bananaboats still have a romantic allure.
The ARCTIC GOOSE was origanally built in 1974 at Aalborg Vaerft for Lauritzen as TUNISIAN REEFER. In 1988 a cargosection was added at Jurong Shipyards, Singapore. The TUNISIAN REEFER became ARCTIC GOOSE in 1995 and has since changed flag a couple of times.

The aggregates dredger REIMERSWAAL is taking a shortcut leaving the port of Zeebrugge. The Dutch owned coaster is a regular visitor, supplying Belgian concrete companies with loads of sand dredged mainly on the Kwintebank.
