About the picture : Sunset on Mars at the Viking Lander 1
landing site. Picture 12A240

Welcome to the Viking Mission Data Book. This site tries to be a
reference to the 1975 Viking missions to the planet Mars. The four spacecraft,
two orbiters and two landers, were then and still are the most ambitious
expedition to the Red Planet. They were extremely successful, both from an
engineering point of view and from the scientific data they returned. Because
the missions were flown way before the internet, we do not have the luxury of
extensive on-line references as we do have now for recent missions. However,
there's still a wealth of information published over the years. This site hopes
to provide a rather complete picture of different aspects of the mission. Of
course, it will have to grow and I hope that you, the interested reader, will
help to achieve that goal by reporting any mistakes, additions, comments,
suggestions, criticism etc. In the meantime, go explore and enjoy !
