Invader Zim is Jhonen's first actual cartoon series. It all started when Jhonen was contacted by Ms. Harrington, who had read Squee! and worked at Nickelodeon. Later she became executive producer of Invader Zim.
After one season and a half, Nickelodeon decided to cancel Invader Zim, upsetting the many fans the series already had. One of their reasons for cancelling it was "too much violence"; it makes you wonder why Tom and Jerry never got cancelled.

Jhonen Vasquez actually had a lot of arguments with Nickelodeon about some scenes in Invader Zim. This is partly because he wrote the scripts for Zim with his idea of fun in mind, and mostly ignored the fact that the series was meant for children, although Invader Zim is definitely not as violent or disturbing as Johnny or Squee.
The story of Invader Zim is the following: an alien Invader from the planet Irk gets banished to Earth, although he thinks he's on a mission to take over the planet. On Earth, he disguises himself as a human and goes to school to learn as much as possible about our species. He doesn't like it very much - and that's where Jhonen's obvious loathing of people comes up again.
