London, printed for Dorman Newman... sold at his shop at the King's Arms in the Poultry. 1678, in-folio, frontispiece portrait of Bentivoglio + title printed in red & black + (6)nn pp + large folding map + 387 pp +(1)(bl) + (19)nn pp (index) + 57 pp (A Continuation of the History) + (1)(bl). With 23 portraits in the text (some tipped on). Bound in contemporary full calf, raised gilt spine, extremeties and joints of binding restored, with a new title label, tipped on to the first paste down : a circular english heraldic engraved ex-libris. Inside with the usual slight stains and some browning. On the whole still a good copy with the interesting large map of the Netherlands by R. Morden & W. Berry in very fine condition. This is the second edition of Bentivoglio's account of the war in Flanders which led to the independance of the Netherlands (first was from 1654). The Continuation which runs until 1675 is of course here in first edition. price: €500.00 |

It was alleged that he acted on the instigation of the Jesuits of Douai (Dowaai), hence this defense of the Jesuits by Costerus against the Calvinists. Binnenzijde van het voorplat is bekleed met oranje gekleurde zijde (zijde iets beschadigd en met lijmsporen, verder in mooie toestand). Luxueus ingebonden herinneringsplaquette gemaakt ter gelegenheid van het bezoek van koningin Wilhelmina aan Frankrijk in Juni 1912. Op 3 juni bezocht ze, met als gastheer Armand Fallières, Satory in de omgeving van Versailles, waar het Franse leger ter harer ere een grote legeroefening organiseerde. Bijna 100 jaar later vonden we dit unieke drukwerk bij een Franse boekhandelaar. We vermoeden dat deze plaquette bedoeld was om haar aangeboden te worden. De reden dat dit niet gebeurde was wellicht een te laat opgemerkte spellingsfout in het Nederlandse Wapenschild. He came to Antwerp in 1582 in the company of the ''Duc d'Anjou'' and later served with the expedition of the Duke of Leicester in the Netherlands . When Leicester left the Netherlands he became commander in chief of the English troops, which he stationed in Geertruidenberg. He was also governor of Bergen op Zoom in 1586. Willoughby's letters and dispatches during this period are neatly summarized and fully indexed. The author was a member of the '' Grote Raad '' at Mechelen and in 1741 he was president of the '' Raad van Vlaanderen ''. This treatise was first published in Latin, without a date (1726) in Mechelen. This is the first and only translation in Dutch. In 1727 an edition in French was published. The treaty of Utrecht which ended the ''War of the Spanish Succession 1701-1714'' contained some very adverse trade arrangements for the Southern Low Countries which had changed from Spanish rule to Austrian rule. The author defends the freedom of the seas and the trade which was seriously hampered in the Southern Low Countries by the treaty. The very succesfull '' Oostendse Compagnie'' founded in 1723 and which handled in 1725 already over 50% of Western European tea import was considered by Great-Britain and Holland to be in breach of the treaty. The book , as a defence of free trade, obviously failed because the '' east india company '' was put on hold by the treaty of Paris in 1727 and finally forbidden in 1731 (treaty of Vienna). price: €1000.00 |

The treaty of Utrecht which ended the ''War of the Spanish Succession 1701-1714'' contained some very adverse trade arrangements for the Southern Low Countries which had changed from Spanish rule to Austrian rule. The very succesfull '' Oostendse Compagnie'' founded in 1723 and which counted in 1725 already for over 50% of Western European tea import was considered by Great-Britain and Holland to be in breach of the treaty.
