Torino, Giacinto Marietti, 1825, 5 parts, being volume X , XI , XII, XIII , XIV of the collected works, bound in 4 vols in-8°, (2)nn pp + 396 pp ; (12)nn pp (preface by Marietti , letter from A. The complete works of Daniello Bartoli were published in Torino by Marietti in 1825-26 in 38 volumes. The first 18 volumes formed the ''Opere Storiche'' of which this is Volume X, XI , XII , XIII and XIV. (see De Backer-Sommervogel I , 982). This important work on the history of the Jesuit order was first published between 1650 and 1673 in six volumes. The history begins with a life of St. Ignatius and the founding of the order and continues with three substantial volumes devoted to the Jesuit missions in Asia and the Far East, the first on Asia in general, and the second and third on Japan and China in particular. The volume on the history of the Jesuits in Japan was first published in 1660 as volume 3 of the 6. Daniello Bartoli (1608-1685) was historian of the Jesuits. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1623 . He remained in Italy where he gained distinction as a preacher and a teacher of rhetoric. The high quality of his writing became apparent to his superiors and he was called to Rome in 1650 where he was made historian of the order and published a variety of works on history, literature and science. From 1671-73 he was rector of the Collegio Romano (now the Gregoriana), the principal Jesuit university. His description of the Jesuit world was highly regarded at the time and later Italian writers such as Leopardi thought very highly of Bartoli's prose.

CHARLES LE GOBIEN - Jean Baptiste DU HALDE ( editors ) - François-Xavier D'ENTRECOLLES - Ippolito DESIDERI
Lettres edifiantes et curieuses ecrites des Missions Etrangeres par quelques Missionaires de la Compagnie de Jesus. Recueil XV. Paris, chez Nicolas Le Clerc, 1722, in-8°, 16,5 x 9.5 cm, xl pp + 418 pp + (10) nn pp (privilage and table) + 1 folding map of South India and Sri Lanka ( Ceylon), contemporary full calf, raised back with gilt title , edges painted red, some small traces of use at binding, small old library stamp on title but still a good copy. This is ''Receuil XV'' (volume 15) of the first edition of the famous series of Jesuit letters, published in France from 1702 until 1776. These regular publications of letters by Jesuit missionaries, stationed all over the world represent one of the most important sources on the outside world in 18th century Western Europe. By these letters the European intellectuals discovered in a passionate way the customs and history of exotic kingdoms. Both Voltaire and Montesquieu were indebted to them for their ideas on China and the Far East. This issue contains a letter by the rev. Venance Bouchet on India, d'Entrecolles on China, Desideri on Tibet , Labbe on Tenerife and South-America ...(Letter by Desideri : see John Lust '' Western Books on China'' item 195 - which is a similar publication, our letter not in Lust ).
