Contemporary manuscript ex-libris of an unidentified jesuit college written in the upper margin of the title. First quire with a rectangular clear waterstain at the lower inner margin, quire F also with this waterstain, some browning and some marginal worm holes at some pages but in all a good and complete copy. Manuel da Costa ( Acosta ) (Lisbon 1541-1604) collected these letters which illustrate the history of the first contacts between the Western and Eastern civilisation. It includes letters from e.g. the Jesuit Francis Xavier who introduced Christianity in Japan in 1549. The original text in Portugese was never published but a translation made in Rome by Maffei was first published in Dillingen (in 1571, one year before this Parisian edition). Our edition also contains the dedication to Cardinal Otto Truchsess von Walburg, former Prince-Bishop of Augsburg, who resided since 1568 in Rome and who was also the founder of the university of Dillingen. The complete works of Daniello Bartoli were published in Torino by Marietti in 1825-26 in 38 volumes. The first 18 volumes formed the ''Opere Storiche'' of which this is Volume VII , VIII and IX. (see De Backer-Sommervogel I , 982). This important work on the history of the Jesuit order was first published between 1650 and 1673 in six volumes. The history begins with a life of St. Ignatius and the founding of the order and continues with three substantial volumes devoted to the Jesuit missions in Asia and the Far East, the first on Asia in general, and the second and third on Japan and China in particular. The volume on the history of the Jesuits in Asia was first published in 1653 as volume 2 of the 6. This re-edition contains at the end the ''Missione al Gran Mogor del P. Ridolfo Aquaviva..sua Vita e Morte...descritta dal D. Bartoli. Daniello Bartoli (1608-1685) was historian of the Jesuits. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1623 . He remained in Italy where he gained distinction as a preacher and a teacher of rhetoric. The high quality of his writing became apparent to his superiors and he was called to Rome in 1650 where he was made historian of the order and published a variety of works on history, literature and science. From 1671-73 he was rector of the Collegio Romano (now the Gregoriana), the principal Jesuit university. His description of the Jesuit world was highly regarded at the time and later Italian writers such as Leopardi thought very highly of Bartoli's prose. price: €250.00 |

Bartoli consist of an illustrated dedication by Angelus Conticellus (dated XIII March 1680) and including a small portrait (engraved by Jacques Blondeau) of the dedicacee the holy Roman emperor Leopold I and 24 views of bas-reliefs depicting a triumph in the Roman manner. This triumph was designed by Giulio Romano and erected in the Palazzo del Te (Mantua). It commemorated the appointment of Gianfrancesco Gonzaga in 1432 as marquess of Mantua by the holy roman emperor Sigismund. In 1630 the complete interiors of the Palazzo were destroyed. The album contains 114 portrait engravings printed on strong laid paper without a watermark. Portrait size ca. 125 x 91 mm. The portraits are numbered in roman numbers ( I - CXIV) in the centre at the top and have a name caption in the centre at the bottom. All engravings are signed at bottem left in the plate : Plates 11 , 13 , 43 , 45 , 46 , 57 , 58 , 77 , 94 , 97 , and 102 ( in all 11 plates) are signed '' Ioseph Testana sculps.'' ; 53 plates signed ''E. Picart sculps. '' and 50 plates signed Vallée. (Plates 28 is signed Vallée but this name seems to be added at a later stage). According to Cicognara (note at item 2792) this album was published in Rome in 1669 with an allegorical frontispiece and some annotations by the compiler's brother Antonio (this frontispiece and the annotations are lacking here). Giovanni Giustino Ciampini (Rome 1633 - 1698) became, after his law studies ''Magister'' at the Apostolic Chancery, which left him time to pursue his lifelong interest in Roman and Early Christian antiquity. The author (Montfort 1500 - Naarden 1574) studied at the Collegium Trilingue at Leuven University and became a catholic priest in Utrecht. His sympathy for the Reformation earned him the nickname '' de Luyterse Paap '' ( the Lutheran Papist). This is the rare first edition of his study on the history of the diocese of Utrecht and how it was incorporated by Charles V of Habsburg, emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, into the Netherlands. A second edition in Latin was published nearly one hundred years later (in 1643 ). The first , apparently very poor translation into Dutch , was made by A. The publication started when Belgium was attacked by Germany. The first issues are very patriotic and deal with the exploits of the Belgian army operating against the German invaders. When nearly all of Belgium, Brussels included, was occupied, the periodical continued to publish under German censorship, its main subject still being to illustrate the war on all fronts. Gregorio Leti (1630-1701) wrote a number of anti-Catholic works, "...The fact that his uncle was a prelate and Leti lived in his household...explains Leti's intimate knowledge of the abuses and intrigues which were present in the papal court." On page 2 are printed the resolutions of the 4th of August 1870 passed at the meeting in Willis's Rooms in London which directly led to the foundation of the British National Society for aid to the sick and wounded in war, the immediate forerunner to the Red Cross. This publication deals extensively with the first tremendous project undertaken by the Society ; a project for which it was initially founded: giving medical aid to the wounded French and German soldiers in the 1870 war. Florence Nigthingale was a member of the Ladie's Committee. This publication gives a detailed account with much statistical and factual information on the aid delivered by the British Society. This a total of 55 plates (54 according the list + the Maurits portrait ; complete copy ). Bound in contemporary full vellum with blindtooling on both covers, raised back with manuscript title on spine. Binding a bit soiled but technically very sound, interior with the usual few minor stains , a small waterstain at the last (index) leaves, on the whole a very good copy with the plates in excellent condition. This a well preserved copy of this rare and important book in its original Dutch vellum binding. First edition of this finely illustrated book covering all of the Americas. It was the best illustrated work of the American continent at the time of publication and it was almost immediately translated in English (by John Ogilby) and German. The plates in the text are the same as those in the translations, but are by definition earlier and therefore better impressions. It contains e.g. a map of the New-York area where Brooklyn is still called Breukelen, a map of Virginia, Carolina. The folding map at the beginning still depicts California as an island.
