Bound in contemporary full calf, smooth decorated spine with red leather title label, both covers with the coat of arms of the Dutch town Zwolle ( Zwollae ) within a triple gilt fillet border, one fillet being a floral one. Traces of green silk ties. Prizebinding of the town of Zwolle (without the prize). Nicely preserved although the front hinge was expertly repaired.

On verso title small cancellation stamp of the Bibliothèque Royale de Belgique (dated 1861). Interesting provenance. Van Hulthem's library of over 30.000 volumes was bought en bloc by the young Belgian Royal Library. This book was sold in 1861as a double.

Willems 420. First edition, second impression with a sirene in woodcut at the head of the second leaf and page 238 misnumbered (248 instead). Willems writes very laudatory remarks on this edition and considers it to be the finest of all the Elzevier productions. He explicitly writes on our edition ; '' cette réimpression (de la première édition) est admirablement exécutée (et) copie ligne pour ligne l'édition originale ''.

The six full page engravings represent members of the Austrian imperial family as they were depicted at the Brera College (Collegio Braidensis ) to celebrate the marriage of Maria Beatrice Ricciarda d' Este (1750 - 1829) with Ferdinand of Austria (1754 - 1806), which took place in Milan 15th October 1771. According notes on pp. 326 of '' Teatri di Formazione ; actio, parola e immagine nella scena gesuitica del Sei-Settecento a Milano'' author Giovanna Zanlonghi, published in 2002 (Vita e Pensiero) the first part of the publication - the oratio- was written by Calimero Cataneo and pronounced at the College on Jan. 29th 1772. The compiler remains anonymous but the title vignette indicates a Jesuit author (?) , the introduction contains short biographies of Catullus, Tibullus and Propertius based on '' De Poëtis Latinus '' by Petrus Crinitus (Florence 1474-1507). Rare Antwerp schoolbook edition , no entry in the STCV (April 2013).

The Jesuits established a printing press in Vienna in 1551 which was closed 4 years later. In 1577 the equipment was transferred to Turgau where it was intermittently used by the Jesuits until 1775 when it was finally acquired by the university of Turgau. Very rare. We could not find a copy via WorldCat.

The book is printed on 200 gr. Arches paper. The binding was designed and executed by Habib Dingle. The text translated by Pauline Wehrle with the permission of the Rudolf Steiner Press relates the dream of young man who slept for 12 winter nights . This old Norwegian song was first written down in 1851 by Landstad in Telemark (Norway). Very fine book production in a fittingly well designed binding.
