item 20916 ALDEGONDE de Saint Joseph dite ERREMBAULT (provenance) Messes des Dimanches et des Saints de l'anneé, selon l'usage de l'ordre des FF. Prescheurs. 1710 . A l'usage de Soeur M. Aldegonde de S. Joseph ditte Errembault. S.l. (Southern Belgium, Northern France), 1710, manuscript on paper, (2)(title in red and black) + 360 pp + (11)nn pp + 17 pp (index) + (1)(additions to index) + (6)(blank), bound in contemporary black leather with brass clasps (one clasp missing), pages 10-13 a bit dustsoiled and frayed, but a nicely preserved manuscript. The manuscript contains the music for the Roman Catholic Sunday masses during the year, and also for the Saints. As indicated in the title the book was for the use of a sister of the Dominican order. This is further corroborated by the large title on pp 268 for the feast of Saint Dominique. The manuscript contains 9 staves to the page and is entirely written in black and red. Only p 268 contains a few blue letters and 1 gilt one. The text has been added to the staves in a very careful handwriting. Titles and initials are in red. At the end (unnumbered pages) is added a ''Missa Antverpiensis'' clearly in a later less careful handwriting. This hand made also some additions to the index. We have not been able to identify the original owner of the manuscript. Her name does not figure in the Monasticon Belge. In 1710 there were ca. 30 convents for female Dominicans on the actual Belgian territory. The Errembault family most probably originates from the Hainaut region.

(Tail turn-in of one volume slightly torn, one vol. very slightly loose in binding, some slight soiling at a few pages but still a nice and impressive set in a contemporary luxury binding). A rare complete set of a late 18th century liturgical edition by the Antwerp Plantin Press, illustrated with full page copperengravings, printed throughout in red and black, with vignettes and tailends printed either in red or black from woodengravings. The breviary was one of the most important liturgical books in the Roman catholic church. These in-4° editions served for the daily readings by the religious communities. Because of this daily manipulating and the rather regularly changings of the texts, which led to the discarting of outdated versions; complete and good copies of pre-1800 breviaries are very rare, even more so in a luxury binding.

item 39898 SAILLY Thomas S.J. Thesaurus litaniarum ac orationum sacer. Cum suis adversus Sectarios Apologijs... Bruxellae ( Brussel ) , Ex Officina Rutgeri Velpii, 1598 , in-8°, (32) nn pp + 400 pp + (8) nn pp (last page blank). Pagination errors ; 61 for 77 , 337 for 336 , 43 for 343...Title page and titles on all pages up till pp. 335 (leaf X8) printed in red. Title with copper engraved vignet ; verso of title is a full page engraving depicting coat-of-arms ; with a total of 39 in-text copper engravings (one emblematical) as indicated by De Backer-Sommervogel VII-405 . Bound in contemporary full vellum with overlapping edges and traces of ties. Binding a bit worn and the bookblock a bit deformed, first paste down and title page with several ex-library markings spanning the four centuries of the book's existence. The first ex-libris in contemporary manuscript ink notation '' Bibliotheca Canonica Rubeae Vallis'' (Roodklooster in Oudergem, Brussels, in the 14th-c. home of Jan van Ruusbroec). Most probably some annotations on pp. 121-122, 132 ... were also made at Roodklooster. Last leaf pasted down to cover, some small marginal worming, one figure on pp 280 inked out. Still a good and interesting copy of a 16th cent. liturgical book with expensive copper illustrations. The composition of the book clearly shows that the publisher/printer aimed too high. The last quires (YZAaBbCc) are printed on inferior paper, red titles and copper illustrations have disappeared here. First edition, the author was confessor to Alexander Farnese. The engravings are by Pieter van der Borcht. The book was put on the Roman Index of forbidden books because the liturgical texts were considered to be unorthodox. (USTC number 402450).
