Francesco Albizzi (1593 - 1684), cardinal since 1654, very important figure in the Holy Inquisition of his days. Studied law, married with several children, but took up holy orders after the early death of this wife. Mainly worked for the Curia, managed daily business in the Holy Office, and was sent on a diplomatic mission to Cologne. In Germany he saw many witches burnt, which marked him for life. Back in Rome he climbed in the church hierarchy, fought jansenism, became a full member of the Holy Office, and did his best to curb the excesses of witch hunting: witches' flights and sabbaths occurred but rarely and all instances of witchcraft had to be carefully proved. The Holy Office had his instructions printed in 1657 and the present volume had to be sent to fanatic witch hunters. Fine set. A German Benedictine, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Salzburg, b. at Munich, in Bavaria, 13 July 1690, d. at Salzburg, 9 February, 1752. He made his religious profession at the Abbey of St. Peter, Salzburg, in 1706, and was ordained to the priesthood in 1713. Having been made a Doctor of Canon and Civil Law (1715), in 1721 he succeeded Benedict Schmier, as professor of canon law at the Benedictine University of Salzburg, where he remained for a period of twenty years. In 1729 he was appointed vice-chancellor of the university. The "Commentarius in Jus Canonicum universum" which Bocken published at Salzburg (1735-39), is his most important work. He had previously (1722-28) issued a number of treatises on the five books of the Decretals, these, now thoroughly revised and supplemented, were incorporated in his larger work, to the third volume of which, in an appendix, he also added a lengthy disquisition "De praescriptionibus". Very elaborate conclusion (or statement of claim) in the trial of Mr. Jan Baptiste d'Hane against François Rym. The manuscript consists of no less than 1486 paragraphs taking in all over 400 pp. Some of the paragraphs are quotations from judicial books or documents and are quoted in Latin or French. The panels are composed of small (34 x 23 mm) biblical scenes with latin captions underneath. E. g. the canon scene (CONSUMATU) ; Adam andf Eve (PECCATUM) ..., interior with some clear old waterstains. The author used for this compilation the texts of over 700 authors. Nice copy. Antonius Matthaeus, the second, not to be confounded with his father or his son, both also named Antonius and also active in the legal profession, was born in Marburg. He taught at Harderwijk and became professor at Utrecht university in 1634. This is the second and only Amsterdam edition. The first edition was published in Utrecht in 1644. This pioneering publication on criminal law is generally considered to be one of the first modern commentaries. He grouped his commentaries on the ''Digestes'' in a methodical order which comprised a complete system of criminal law. He already includes elements of natural law and Hugo Grotius' ''Jus belli ac pacis'' which appeared in 1625 is often cited. There were at least 15 editions before 1800. The author was a member of the '' Grote Raad '' at Mechelen and in 1741 he was president of the '' Raad van Vlaanderen ''. This treatise was first published in Latin, without a date (1726) in Mechelen. This is the first and only translation in Dutch. In 1727 an edition in French was published. The treaty of Utrecht which ended the ''War of the Spanish Succession 1701-1714'' contained some very adverse trade arrangements for the Southern Low Countries which had changed from Spanish rule to Austrian rule. The author defends the freedom of the seas and the trade which was seriously hampered in the Southern Low Countries by the treaty. The very succesfull '' Oostendse Compagnie'' founded in 1723 and which handled in 1725 already over 50% of Western European tea import was considered by Great-Britain and Holland to be in breach of the treaty. The book , as a defence of free trade, obviously failed because the '' east india company '' was put on hold by the treaty of Paris in 1727 and finally forbidden in 1731 (treaty of Vienna). price: €1000.00 |

The treaty of Utrecht which ended the ''War of the Spanish Succession 1701-1714'' contained some very adverse trade arrangements for the Southern Low Countries which had changed from Spanish rule to Austrian rule. The very succesfull '' Oostendse Compagnie'' founded in 1723 and which counted in 1725 already for over 50% of Western European tea import was considered by Great-Britain and Holland to be in breach of the treaty.
