The guidebook to this Labyrinth was first published in Paris 1677; written by Charles Perrault, it was illustrated with engravings by Sébastian Le Clerc.The garden was designed by Le Nôtre and for the 39 lead fountains in the form of animals, nicely rendered here in copper engravings, he was inspired by Aesop's Fables. David Watkin (The rise of architectural history) calls it one of the most impressive and excentric publications of its time. It has a very broad European scope and gives much attention to the Gothic style (here calles '' Pointed'') and the Romanesque (here calles ''Lombard''). The book had a great influence on German architects like Lassaulx , Hübsch, Schinkel, Klenze... and thus probably also on Belgian architecture (?). price: €400.00 |
