This is the first edition of the first printed Italian translation of Alberti's work on architecture, ''De re aedificatoria''. Millard Collection of Italian and Spanish books : item 5. Alberti composed his treatise in Latin and continued to polish it until his death in 1472. It was first published posthumously in Latin in 1485. Leon Battista Alberti (1404 - 1472) is one of the most brilliant dilettantes ever, with a great visual capacity, a strong sense of beauty and a passionate belief that human dignity resides entirely in work (Garin 1952, Schlosser 1929). He is the first to have set out the governing principles of architecture, painting and sculpture within an overall worldview. He was a major contributor to Italian humanism. The title-pages and the text of both parts are printed in Latin and German. The first edition was published in Italian and Latin in Rome (1696-1700). This was a very influential publication on baroque architecture which was translated and published in many european languages. The last part of the book contains a small explanation on fresco painting. See Millard Vol. III , Northern European Books, item 103. Our copy has for the first part an identical collation. For the second part our copy has an extra two plates (numbered 117-118) and an index of 2 pp (which lacks in the Millard copy).
